Really bad fonts

SANS SERIF FONTS I HATE:
futura: oh so difficult to pull off right. But when it's done right, it's beautiful. When it's done wrong, it's a freakin horse. So I just avoid it at all times
kabel: people try to use this as a fun font. But it just looks wrong. The combination of big rounds and yet it still tries to be a skinny font. Just weird. And not a big fan of how it uses angled bridges
avant garde: gawd, another ugly-a55 round font
flora: trying to be 70s in a bad way
tekton: can we PLEASE get another font for architectural drawing that looks better than THIS?

SERIF FONTS I HATE:
bodoni: Those serifs are just too dang thin
Nueva: Just hideous as sin

FUN FONTS I HATE:
bodoni: WORST FONT EVER!
studz: do i really need to explain?
rad: oh wait, i think this is worst font ever. At least Cutout filled in their lines
lemonade: ok, so this isn't too bad. But it's just too thin. It's like a sorry excuse. "Well, i needed a handwriting font and this is all i had."

My location will not be selling cubs tickets on friday

This official sign is hanging up in my work cube saying that "this location will NOT be selling 2004 single game Chicago Cubs tickets on Friday, February 27, 2004."

Post this sign anywhere other than Wrigley Field, and it will be true.

My favorite fonts

What are some of your favorite fonts?

GOOD SANS SERIF FONTS:
Franklin Gothic: hip lookin, despite the fact that one of our clients demands we use it ALL the time on her stuff. (example Mark Bazer sheet)
Avenir: nice round, but not ugly like futura. Century Gothic is kinda like Avenir, but Avenir is nicer (example: KRT Direct postcard)
Myriad: good hardy font that is fun, yet modern, yet traditional. This font does it all. See stephani's note below
Officina Sans: This font looks great for a modern look. However, I feel that it's been used SOOO much. But it still just looks very nice and hip. (example: TV book conference logo) (example: sheet) (example: Insider Trading folder)
Trade Gothic: although I don't use it much. I do use it on spudart stuff (example: see spudart logo)
Eurostile: for futuristic. But I think it's too used now (example: PC Parents ad)
Clearface Gothic: I only use this sans serif for a complementary to a goofy face
Syntax: same thing as I said for the clearface gothic
DIN: Schriften: very cool scientific lookin font

GOOD SERIF FONTS:
Linoletter: good for modern look
Garamond: good for more traditional
ITC: Century: good with fun fonts
Stone Serif: very standard, nice replacement for Times
Rockwell: only for headlines where i want a bold slab serif. Lino letter makes a better slab serif for body copy (example: Mark Bazer site) (example: chicago art poster)
Adobe Jenson: i'll use this for a super duper fancy frilly project. I love all the optional swashes and ligatures (example: Dear Pharmacist sheet and logo)
Matrix Script: I LOVE how this font looks, but it never seems too look right in any of my projects

GOOD HANDWRITING FONTS:
Komika: standard comic bubbles, but an incredible array of weights
Good Dog: a bit more goofy and fun than Komika (example: Lola Banner ads)
Toddler: even more goofy font than gooddog
Journal: a bit too serify. Can only work for certain things

GOOD FUN FONTS
Twelve Ton Goldfish: See notes on funhouse below (example 1)
Comix Heavy: Comix Heavy, not the regular Comix (example: Sweet Taste) (example: Licensing brochure)
Alba: a round font done right!
Funhouse: BEWARE! You MUST use this font correctly! You HAVE to convert this font to outlines and fit the letters together like a puzzle. Do NOT leave this font as just straight type. It looks utterly moronic that way. (example: rootonym logo)
What are some of your favorite fonts?

steve bartman: sorry for him?

It's been awhile since the Steve Bartman interfering with the foul ball in Game six of the Chicago Cubs playoffs. We should all have some good perspective on the situation since it's been awhile.

Do you feel sorry for Steve Bartman? Or do you not?
I have a theory on this, but first I would like to hear people's responses.

Throwing things

Try throwing something.
* Throw your backpack into the elevator
* Throw a bouncy ball
* Toss a book on the ground
* Throw your pen up in the air
It's fun!

Jose Canseco says...

According to atmreports, "Jose Canseco says he has a tryout scheduled with the Dodgers for March 1."

I really like how they worded that. "Jose Canseco SAYS..."

the constant headache you are not aware of

Ever wonder if you always have a headache, but never realize it?

Perhaps everyone's heads are different where we each feel a different constant level of headacheness.

The level of headache is so constant that you are not aware of it. When you do get a headache, it's actually just an increased level of headacheness, but once it's over, you just return back to the same level of headache you had before.

jumping off a bridge into ice

If one were to jump off a bridge (say 40 feet high) into a frozen body of water (say under 0.5 inch thick), when the ice breaks, would it cut you? Or would you just go right through?

Potatoes are more romantic than roses

From Cooking Master Tom

How a chef thinks:

Roses only last like a couple weeks, and that's if you leave them in water. And they really only exist to be pretty, so that's like saying, "My love for you is transitory and based solely on your appearance."

But a potato!

Potatos last for ever, man. In fact, not only will they not rot, they actually grow stuff even if you just leave them in the sack! That part alone makes it a good symbol, but there's more! There are so many ways to enjoy a potato! you can even make a battery with it, and that's like saying "I have many ways in which I show my love for you." And potatos may be ugly, but they're still awesome, so that's like saying "It doesn't matter at all what you look like, I'll still love you."

Desk of the Apes

It's Dave's birthday tomorrow, so I decked out his desk with a five foot tall inflatable monkey, 7 smaller inflatable monkeys, and 258 images of monkeys from google images. Check out the web gallery of photos from this event taken with my cameraphone.

chicago welding classes?

In college I built a cd tower out of re-bar (Click on the above photos to view larger images). Apparently i'm not that great of a welder, cuz the joints broke after moving out of my parents and into my place 3 years later. So wrapping this heavy twine around the joints meant to keep it together. It was always in my mind that it looked good, but just now upon closer inspection, the twine is quite messy. :-)

Anyhow, the point of this post is to illustrate that I would like to take a welding class in Chicago. Anybody know of some good places? The Evanston Art Center offers some welding classes, but that's a bit far away. Someone suggested some union or trade school, but where are they?

Wouldn't it bizarre if...

Wouldn't it bizarre if on food packaging, the total weight not only included the food, but it also included the weight of the actual package.

How does the current president celebrate presidents day?

On Presidents day, we celebrate the presidents of our past. So then what does the current president do? Could he possibly treat it like secretaries day or boss day? Where he would get presents and such cuz it's Presidents day, his day.

No side salad at McDonalds

After ordering a side salad at McDonalds today, I was surprised when the orderdude told me that they didn't have any. All they put in those things are just the lettuce they use on the burgers. Why not just throw a bunch of that into a big mac box and give it to me. :-)

Why water unfrozen under bridge?

Why is it that the rest of the river is frozen while the water under the bridge is not frozen? If anything, the water under the bridge should remain frozen, because it's hidden from sunlight.

eating popcorn with a fork

Spearing popcorn with a fork is rather difficult. After getting the first kernel on the fork, the rest just don't go on leaving you with a big mess.

I need a gigapet

There are only two non-related results for a gigapet search on yahoo shopping. This is the place that apparently has "Millions of products from thousands of stores." yeah, and no gigapets.

New word: Slope

Okay, it's not really a new word. But here's a new definition for it.

slope
noun
1) A merging of two words: slow and dope. "I've been so lazy at home lately, i'm feeling like such a slope."
2) Someone who has the feeling that things are heading downhill.
