Blackhawks helmets wrong size on Art Institute lions

Someone made some wrong measurements, because the Chicago Blackhawks helmets don't quite fit onto the heads of the lions in front of the Art Institute.

The Art Institute of Chicago posted a very nice photo album online of the helmets being installed. My brother, unlikelymoose made some good observations about the helmets:
I love the civic pride that the Tute displays for great Chicago sports moments. It shows that the Tute is firmly rooted in the city of Chicago.

However, the helmets really don't fit. I suppose that's part of the charm, but just looks awkward to me. What would work so much better is to have custom-fit Hawks jerseys. EVERYONE loves the Blackhawks jerseys (or sweaters as hockey fans call them). It's rather well-known that the Hawks jerseys are the best looking uniforms in all sports. Why not play off that?
Wouldn't it be cool if they did a crocheted Blackhawks turtleneck sweater on the lions?

Darth Vader vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi

I just thought this photo from the Star Wars Wikia looked cool.

The Force Push, man. Look out.

Dear yelp, we'd like to have custom labels

Yelp is a great site to review restaurants, museums, and other destinations. They also allow you to bookmark places, so you can have a handy list of places you'd like to visit (here's my to-do list). As your to-do list grows, it would be great to be able to group items together. But yelp only allows for three labels.

If you'd like to have custom labels on Yelp, please "like" my "Custom labels on Yelp" at getsatisifaction.com:
==============

Custom labels on yelp
It would be great to be able to create your own labels on yelp. Right now when you save a bookmark, there are only three options for labels:
-- To try
-- To review
-- No label

I would like to be able to add my own labels, so I can sort my bookmarks.
A few examples I'd like to make are:
-- To try with girlfriend
-- To try this year

Please Yelp, allow us to make our own labels.
==============
Again, I'd appreciate anyone "liking" this idea on getsatification.com.

How to bury a submarine underground

Imagine the unique engineering challenges involved in moving the U-505. How do you move a National Historic landmark that weighs as much as three Statues of Liberty and is nearly a city block long? Then, once it is moved, how do you lower it four stories into a new exhibit space?

If you can't see the embedded video above, go to Moving the U505 submarine on msichicago.org.

Here's my live commentary throughout the video:

lol

the submarine slowly moving with all the people running around really fast.
the clouds moving overhead is like the top of the ocean

adjusting the wheels to go up the curb
oh wait. they didn't go up the curb

haha. i like the above head view
LOOK OUT! SUBMARINE ATTACK!
TAKE COVER!

oooh, so they didn't lift it up, they just slide it over onto a elevator sort of thing

YAY! the submarine has now safely landed

What classic movie do you want to see on the 47th ward schedule?

Planning continues for the 1st Annual 47th Ward Outdoor Film Festival. As they finalize the schedule, they would love to hear from you! What classic movie do you want to see on the schedule?

Here's my list:
-- The Blues Brothers (1980)
-- Star Wars (1977)
-- The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars: Episode V) (1980)
-- Return of the Jedi (Star Wars: Episode VI) (1983)
-- Ghost Busters (1984)
-- The Transformers: The Movie (1986) (note, this is the classic animated version from 86, it would look GREAT on the big screen)

What would be on your list of classic movies? Leave a comment on the 47th Ward Film Fest blog (and make sure to say that spudart sent you).

From #journchat: In hiring process, how important is someone's online presence? What is good/bad?

The May 17, 2010 #journchat twitter discussion covered such topics as: SEO vs. clever headlines, iPad readers, hiring someone who uses social media, emailing your resume.

Here's my responses to four of the questions.

-----------------------------------------
Q6) Has SEO influenced a headline (or press release, blog post)?
Do you think SEO will "kill off the clever headline"?(link)

Spudart: A clever headline will attract links, thus helping with SEO #journchat

-----------------------------------------
Q7) Do you think tablet devices (e.g. iPad) can change way ppl read online content?
Will "skimmers" become "readers"? #journchat (link)

Spudart: Prediction: The iPad will enable people to interact with books more than ever (once we can share margin notes) Q7 #journchat

Spudart: @tlockemy I really hope the iPad will have margin note sharing soon. (Thanks for the RT!)Q7 #journchat

-----------------------------------------
Q9) In hiring process, how important is someone's online presence?
What is good/bad? #journchat (link)

Spudart: Your online presence is your reflection. Don't swim in muddy waters. Q9 #journchat

Spudart: @PRjeff Peeps think they can hide in muddy waters online, but Google swims in all ponds (thanks for the RT) Q9 #journchat

Spudart: When hiring, i also like to see the person has interests outside of work, and they carry their passion to that Q9 #journchat

Spudart: If it were my choice, I would only hire people who use social media Q9 #journchat

Spudart: RT @GetPushing: We encourage all staff & interns to be involved in at least 1 charity. Giving back = character. Q9 #journchat

-----------------------------------------
Q11) Is the time coming when you can email and link to resume instead of cover letter/resume? #journchat (link)
Spudart: What if you tweeted your cover letter with a link to your resume? (hmm, actually...) Q11 #journchat

Average design salary for entry-level graduates is between 32k-40k

Someone asked the following question on the Linked N Chicago group.
Fresh Grad Salary Expectations....What are they?

You just graduated college... What are you looking for as far as Salary? Would you turn down a salary of 40K? How do fresh grads determine what they are "worth" or should be starting out at?

I am really curious to hear your answers. Base this off just receiving your bachelors.
Here's my response:
What areas are you looking about?

Coroflot's salary survey covers:
* Architecture
* Design management
* Fashion & apparel design
* Graphic design
* Industrial design
* Interaction design
* Web design
http://www.coroflot.com/designersalary/

There's a chart in their survey that breaks out salaries by years of experience. While they don't cover someone with 0 years experience, they do have 1-3 years covered.
*** The average salary for someone with 1-3 years is just below $40,000. ***
Which seems spot on to me. If I were a grad in the creative field and was offered a job for 40k, I would definitely take it. I know of some places that will pay 30k/year.

AIGA also has a salary survey, although they don't quite break it out into details of levels of experience. They only break out for an entry-level position is for graphic designer.
*** The median salary for an entry-level designer is $35,000 ***
http://www.designsalaries.org/overview.shtml
Any thoughts on how much entry-level designers should be making? Please feel free to leave comments on this quote, or on the Linked N Chicago page (Registration required for the Linked N Chicago page).

Monopolizing the LEGO Ewok minifig market

There are only five different kinds of ewok LEGO mini-figs. They are sold buy hundreds of dealers on bricklink.com. I'm thinking of buying all the LEGO ewok mini-figs under $10 and start selling them for ten bucks each. People gotta have their ewok mini-figs!

Right now there are 705 ewoks for sale under ten bucks on bricklink.com. It would cost me $5,257.37 to buy them all. (that's an average of $7.45 per ewok).

I'd have to sell 525 ewoks to break even. And if I sold all 705 ewoks, I'd make $1,180. Hmmm. Doesn't seem like it's worth it for all the work.

Looks like the new ewok lego mini-fig currency is not going to happen.

Sponsoring the Domingo Ramos page

I'm thinking about sponsoring the Domingo Ramos webpage on baseball-reference.com for $5 a year. What would my ad say?

I already have an old webpage for Domingo Ramos on spudart.org. I could revamp the webpage to match the ad concept.

Looking back at Domingo Ramos now, we can see that he started the trend of wearing over-sized baseball hats. Maybe the ad could be about Domingo Ramos: Trendsetter.

What is one of your favorite quotes from a song lyric?

Do you have any favorite lines from a song? Here's one that I really like; from Ani DiFranco's "Little Plastic Castle"
------------
They say goldfish have no memory
I guess their lives are much like mine
And the little plastic castle
Is a surprise every time
------------
Being able to look at the world in a new abstract way is a quality I love to possess. So yes, I'm like a goldfish who is always in awe of the world around my goldfish bowl home. :-)

In the comments below, please share your favorite quotes from song lyrics.

What book you have read that has had the biggest impact on your life and why?

What a great question! There are multiple areas of my life that I'd like to use to address this question. I have a hard time picking just one book.

Artistically:
Trivia-wise:
Relationships:
Spiritually and overall approach to life:
  • the Bible.
    Hands down. Ok, if we want to get more specific. The Psalms: English Standard Version
    It's a small travel version that I always keep in my bag for reading on the train. It's my most marked-up book. Although really, Daniel really rocked me in terms of getting excited for the end times.

Society:
  • The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
    Just an amazing book that holds much truth about trends. A close one to this is Seth Godin's Tribes. I can't put in the top spot, because I'm currently reading it, and hasn't been time-tested like the Tipping Point for me, which I read eight years ago.

Love of comics:

Using your address book to keep track of people you meet and know

Whenever you add someone to your address book, write down the date and how you met the person. It comes in handy to remember how you know so-and-so.

Anytime you meet people at an event or anything, just pop 'em in your address book, even if you don't have their contact info. The loose contacts you make today might be your next connection down the road. Wow, I sound so marketing-networky saying this, but it's really true.

Even when someone has a new baby, I make an entry in my address book just for that baby. Often I forget the baby names of my coworkers. It's helpful to have their name in my contacts. In the notes field I'll put down "Son of Mary Sue Smith" that way, I can search their record easily.

Put smile emoticons between each letter to really emphasize your instant messages

Want to give something extra impact that upper case bold letters just won't do? Try putting a smiley face emoticon between each letter. It'll give your instant messages that super-duper-incredible impact you were looking for.

Oh and if you want, you can just copy and paste the following text:
T :) H :) A :) T :) :) I :) S :) :) P :) R :) E :) T :) T :) Y :) :) C :) R :) A :) Z :) Y :) ! :)

Share it with your friends today! They'll love you!

Apple TV on a 42-inch TV makes flickr photos look amazing!

The Apple store's 42-inch display makes my photos look amazing!

The Apple Store on Michigan Avenue in chicago has a 42-inch Panasonic display to show off their Apple TV product. Being curious how flickr photos show up on the Apple TV, I pulled up my Chicago HDR set. I stood there for about 15 minutes drooling over how my photos looked. They looked soooooo good.

Seven photos in particular looked fantastic.

Close up of Jewelers Building The new face of Chicago architecture Used fire alarm box Shoe Repair in Chicago's loop Chicago's Trump Tower ruling the sky Chicago Art Institute Lions with Christmas Wreath: 1 Chicago Bean alone in the snow: 4b (super color)

I stood there just in awe. For the past couple years I've stopped shooting HDR photos, becuase for me, there wasn't much meaning in them. They were straight-forward shots without much of a concept. I wanted to have more meaning beyond just what they are. But seeing them in a new context, gave me the inspiration to start shooting HDR photos again. One in particular made me wonder, "wow, I shot that?" It was Prudential Two spire and Carbide & Carbon building spire.

Prudential Two spire and Carbide & Carbon building spire

Horizontal photos look best on the 42-inch tv. Even though this photo is vertical, it looked very historic on the big screen. I was really stunned.

Other photos didn’t look so good. Seeing them on a huge 42-inch display showed how some photos were blown out. Or too saturated. Or unfocused. We joke around about having a huge screen to do computer work on, but a 42-inch screen would really be helpful in doing photoshop work. It would totally feel like painting on a canvas.

Before I walked away I set the screensaver to show my Chicago HDR photos. ;-) I hope the rest of Chicago enjoys them as much I enjoyed watching them.
