jumping off a bridge into ice

If one were to jump off a bridge (say 40 feet high) into a frozen body of water (say under 0.5 inch thick), when the ice breaks, would it cut you? Or would you just go right through?

I can't imagine a time in my life when I was ever cut by ice, but then again I have never jumped off a bridge into an icy river [full of eels no less!]. I believe the thickness would make a difference, as you've mentioned. Under 1/2", I think you would go through it, depending on the angle. If you just jumped in feet first, you'd proably go right throuh.

Now that I've babbled, the true answer probably lies in an arthimetic problem. Distance x Weight x Speed / Velocity...Who's the math whiz here?

i think getting cut by the ice would be the least of your concerns. i would think suicide, hypothermia, and insanity would be higher priorities.

i don't think you would get cut if you're wearing clothing. If you're wearing your birthday suit, then I think you would get cut.

But i think the eels are a bigger concern.
