oh geez. get back to work.

He's also saying, "I'm workin' I'm workin'!"

his job is to clean people's faces. he's not performing that duty in this photo. he's just standing around! get back to work, napkin!
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 10, 04 | 8:57 am
Lol, near Laura! Lol! Part of his job is also to turn himself into fun napkin origami, so he is actually performing part of his expected duties.
He's also saying "Now stretch it out! Exhale! Arch your back and Streeeeeeeeeeeetch!"

ah, he's probably in the trash can by now.
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 10, 04 | 6:36 pm
Nope, still sitting on my desk at work. This photo took some trickery. He would not stand up on his own, so behind him is some tape holding him to the surface.

spudart on Jul 10, 04 | 7:34 pm
but i wonder if the Tribune janitorial staff would recognize his supernatural napkin powers. they might just think he's a folded napkin and pitch him.
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 10, 04 | 10:50 pm
even if they do pitch him, Napkin Man will leap out of the garbage can and save himself.
Posted by:
spudart on Jul 10, 04 | 11:11 pm
so he can propel himself out of deep places. he can't stand up on his own and needs to be taped to surfaces, but can jump out of garbage cans? this sounds fishy.

The powers of a napkin. It can fly, but it can't stand.
Posted by:
spudart on Jul 11, 04 | 10:19 am
can it fly up to your face and wipe it off? hands-free?
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 11, 04 | 10:03 pm
when it's windy, for sure. all the time. Sometimes I have to keep a leash on Napkin Man so he doesn't fly away--then he becomes... KITE MAN! COME HERE KITE MAN! I NEED TO WIPE MY HANDS!
Posted by:
spudart on Jul 11, 04 | 10:12 pm
dirty napkin kite, you mean. sounds great for kids.
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 11, 04 | 10:24 pm
i think Napkin Man needs a costume drawn on him.
will you draw a costume on Napkin Man? It could be the first ever fan art for Napkin Man!

i thought sculpture was supposed to be about the form. won't 2-D art detract from this? when i wanted to paint on my ceramic figures in high school, i was told this was not proper. it was forbidden!
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 12, 04 | 9:58 pm
Here's a whole book about painting on clay,
Painted Clay: Graphic Arts and the Ceramic Surface. Our ceramics teacher from IWU is in there, Rimas Vis Girda. Good ol' Rimas. pp 21, 112-113, 141

forbidden?! did you and one of your ceramic class boyfriends go into the classroom at night when no one was around and paint on your ceramics?
FORBIDDEN!?! What kind of art teacher forbids an artist/art student from doing anything ?!?! I am VERY confused!
Posted by:
Tom on Jul 13, 04 | 7:50 am
i think he was trying to make me aware of the form. he didn't actually FORBID me, because i went ahead and did it anyway. i "painted" some designs with colored glaze on a ceramic figure that i made. looking back, i can see his point. it's just that i'm a painter, so i couldn't help myself.
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 13, 04 | 7:57 am
well, spud, you ARE the one currently in a ceramics class. an interesting coincidence?
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 13, 04 | 8:02 am
coincedence of what? I don't bring Napkin Man to wheelthrowing class.
Posted by:
spudart on Jul 13, 04 | 8:06 am
any cute "people" in your class?
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 13, 04 | 8:12 am
We were allowed to paint things on OUR ceramics in hight school. Remember Charlie Brown's zig zag on his shirt? I painted that on one of my ceramic pieces in high school...
http://www.unlikelymoose.com/art/sculpt/charlie_brown.html
My freshman year roommate was bouncing a tennis ball on the wall and knocked over and broke the piece. I was very upset. But, when I graduated I found the broken piece and put it together with masking tape and I was much happier with the piece being broken with the masking tape.
yea, i bet there are some hot chicas in your ceramics class. Tell us more!
what?! even if there were, would i be talking about it here?

spudart on Jul 13, 04 | 8:31 am
oh i thought
your ceramic piece was a thing about twins. Cuz it's got like two sections. It's just about charlie brown?
Posted by:
spudart on Jul 13, 04 | 8:35 am
twins? maybe subconsciously. i never thought of that. it's funny cuz i made a similar piece before that one. It was two biomorphic pots conjoined. Classmates were saying it looked like boobs. I wasn't happy with that analogy.
moose isn't happy with boobs? spud is confused about cute girls? huh?

back to Napkin Man. is he still alive? did he survive a weekend alone in the Tribune Tower?
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 13, 04 | 9:53 am
He is happily resting atop my monitor.
Posted by:
spudart on Jul 13, 04 | 10:36 am
resting? it must be exhausting to be a folded-up napkin with pretend powers.
Posted by: laura k. on Jul 13, 04 | 5:48 pm
