Prune Soda Challenge

I'll paypal $5.00 to the first person that can tell me where I can legitimately purchase prune soda pop.

Rules: The answer cannot be the recipe for prune soda. It cannot be some website that just merely mentions prude soda. It must be bottled or canned and sold as a real product. And it must either:
A) Be a real company or store in Chicago
B) A website that produces prune soda and can ship it to me

And Dr. Pepper does not count.

Posted by: spudart on Jul 19, 04 | 2:34 pm

aargh! I was all ready to collect my 5 bucks.

http://www.goldinc.com/~shammack/squinonablaga/sq.gloss.txt :carbonated prune juice -- the particular type of soda known as Dr. Pepper. Word origin: rumour has it that Dr. Pepper was intended to taste like carbonated prune juice. Example: "This tastes like carbonated prune juice."

Thanks to Dave for debunking the Dr. Pepper prune juice myth with giving me this link: www.snopes.com/business/secret/drpepper.asp

hmm, are you having some kind of medical problem, spud? are your innards in a bind?

Posted by: laura k. on Jul 19, 04 | 4:20 pm

Golly, can you imagine the great taste of prune-flavored soda pop? I simply cannot wait for it. Seriously though. Recently I bought some dried prunes and they were actually quite good--only when you eat a couple at a time.

Posted by: spudart on Jul 19, 04 | 8:17 pm

right, why are you eating prunes as well? are you having some trubble down south? i mean, they're good for you, but so are other things. like dried apricots!

Posted by: laura k. on Jul 19, 04 | 8:43 pm

Got apricot soda? Papaya spears are pretty good.

Dr. Pepper makes the world taste better

Posted by: spudart on Jul 20, 04 | 3:02 am

Have you noticed that prunes aren't called prunes anymore? They are called dried plums! But yes, they are delicious, and so is apricot nectar! Yum!

Okay, I'm stalling. Instead of being here and commenting, I've been looking for plum soda. I should have known, however, that spudart prolly only put out the call/challenge when he exhausted all of his resources. He is a master searcher, so if he can't find plum soda, it prolly can't be found.

And then I thought of a resource that I have used to find unusual foods from around the world. http://www.ethnicgrocer.com

I bet they would have plum soda, but the site seems to be down, either temporarily or permanently.

Since Plum Soda is an Asian novelty, you might try any of the shops on Argyle in New Little Chinatown.

I'm not after the five bucks, I'm here for the challenge!! I want you to find Plum Soda!!

Posted by: Tom on Jul 20, 04 | 4:37 am

prunes ARE dried plums, aren't they?

Posted by: laura k. on Jul 20, 04 | 6:18 am

Yes, they are! The Prune Industry decided that the word "prune" had a negative conotation and decided to re-market them as "dried plums". Sales took off and now "dried plums" are one of the highest selling dried fruits on the market, so it worked!

And now I just realized that I have been searching for PLUM SODA and not PRUNE SODA, which I'll bet are NOT the same thing at all.

I give up

Okay! I found PLUM Soda in Chicago:

Salty plum soda ($1.85)
Where: The Noodle Vietnamese Restaurant
Taste test: The concoction is made in-house with sugar, soda water and a chopped, brine-soaked plum. While anything involving brine conjures up bad memories of accidentally swallowing seawater while swimming at the beach, the sweet/ salty taste of this soda makes for an interesting contrast.
Also serving: "Soda with yolk and condensed milk." This one does involve a real egg, and when our waitress advised that we probably wouldn't like it, we took her word for it.

Really! Where is The Noodle Vietnamese Retaurant. Metromix and Chireader.com both queried zero results.

Posted by: spudart on Aug 05, 04 | 8:38 pm

ooh, we must visit this restaurant! i want to watch spud drink this stuff.

Noodles & Company
930 Church St.
Evanston, IL60201

Okay, so it isn't in Chicago ... but it's close ... no?

They have Prune Soda at NOODLES AND COMPANY?! golly. who'da thunk it.

Posted by: spudart on Aug 06, 04 | 7:42 am

Where's my five bucks?

Hahahahahahahahahaha!

I just bought some prune juice from Walgreens. It's great! seriously. it's so thick. it's like having a prune shake. or a prune smoothie.

Posted by: spudart on Sep 08, 04 | 9:04 pm

don't drink too much of it. it's well-known as an all-natural remedy for constipation.

Posted by: laura k. on Sep 08, 04 | 9:11 pm

"prune smoothie"

*barf*

I had a 'salty plum soda' at a Phe (spelling) restraunt near Washington D.C.

It's very good.

Not something I'd drink every day - but Ii actually found this webpage because I too am looking to order it off the I-Net.

oh john, you totally have to let me know if you find prune soda for sale on this internet.

Posted by: spudart on Dec 15, 04 | 9:06 pm

Here's the recipe for a really tasty salty plum soda:
(It's much better than buying it in a store, trust me!)

1) Buy a bottle these, and use one plum per serving...

2) Combine with approximately 8 to 10oz of club soda.

3) Mix with 2 spoons of sugar (or according to how sweet you like it...)

4) Crush plum and stir VERY WELL.

5) Add 2 ice cubes.

Dave, thanks for the links to the different flavors of soda on giraffe beverages. Do they sell a prune soda? I do not see it on their site.

Prunely yours,
matt

Posted by: yeah, the crazy one... look a PONY!!! on Oct 09, 07 | 3:02 pm

I'm not sure if prune soda exists on earth. If it does it would undoubtedly be called "Crap-Ola". Have you tried to google that product?

Posted by: David on Apr 25, 09 | 12:42 am

I still love my salty plum soda recipe!
