New York Mets Stink

Word is that the Mets are gonna pay Carlos Beltran $25 million a year to join their team. How fitting that he would join the Mets. Every player on the Mets have sucked. Yeah, Beltran rocked last season, but he's so overrated right now. Here's the cast of "all-stars" he could be joining in Mets history:

C Mike Piazza, Gary Carter
1B Keith Hernandez
2B Edgardo Alfonzo
3B Howard Johnson
SS Bud Harrelson (.234 average, 6 HR, 12 seasons with Mets)
OF Lee Mazzilli, Bobby Bonilla
OF Darryl Strawberry, Rusty Staub
OF Mookie Wilson, Dave Kingman

P Tug McGraw
P Tom Seaver
P Dwight Gooden
P Jerry Koosman
P Sid Fernandez, Jesse Orosco

Oh yeah, what a heritage. You know you got problems when you have to list Mookie Wilson as an all-star outfielder. And lookit that shortstop. At least the Mets have rocked in the catcher department with two of the arguably best catchers ever; and Tom Seaver was great. But everything. bleh.

Is this a complete list of Met all-time all-stars?

oh here's a list of all-time team for the Mets: http://www.thebaseballpage.com/past/att/mets/default.htm

Rey Ordonez as shortstop! what a joke!

how did Paul Assenmacher make it on the all-time team list for the cubs?! http://www.thebaseballpage.com/past/att/cubs/default.htm

I was getting nervous there for a second! Tom Seaver rocked ... I think he is one of the all time greats!

Posted by: Tom on Jan 05, 05 | 3:16 pm

what a terrible team!

piazza had his best games in LA, not NY.

Bobby Bonilla certainly had his best games in Pittsburg, not NY. Bonilla had to play with ear plugs because the NY fans were so mean to him. That qualifies him as an all-time Met? geez.

Edgardo Alfonso was just ok. Wasn't he on the mets for only a couple seasons?

keith hernandez and daryl strawberry are the only decent position players.

hojo had a few good seasons. he was ok.

and then there's gary carter. i never liked him. he was in his prime when i was in the middle of grade school. he musta done something really dumb to tick me off.

dwight gooden- great
darryl strawberry-great
jose reyes-great
next beltran-great
mets aren't the yanks but they get their fair share of great players we just have been burned recently with the likes of mo vahgn and others

Posted by: adam on Jan 05, 05 | 6:36 pm

mo vaughn and "others". That "others" list is pretty darn long:

Tom Glavine (good, but not great like Atlanta days)

Mike Piazza (very good for a catcher, but not great like LA days)

Kazuo Matsui (should go back to Japan)

Cliff Floyd (shows moments of brillance. that's just the problem. it's only moments and not extended periods of time)

Richard Hidalgo (had one great year in Houston)

David Cone (good but not like his Yankee and Royals days)

Roberto Alomar (complete bust.)

Tony Clark (had promise when he came up with Detroit. hasn't done squat since)

Jeromy Burnitz (decent with Milwaukee. bloated numbers with Colorado. done poopie in NY)

And that's just from the 2004 and 2003 rosters. I'm getting tired. I didn't even touch on Pedro Martinez! What a time bomb that will be!

I will give the Mets some credit. At least they are trying. Things could be worse. They could be the White Sox and either not try at all.

A lot of unfair hostility here.

Oh yeah, what a heritage. You know you got problems when you have to list Mookie Wilson as an all-star outfielder.

You don't have to list anybody.

And lookit that shortstop.

A fine player (two All-Star teams) from an era when shortstops generally didn't hit.

So the Mets haven't produced too many all-stars at shortstop? What of it? What does that have to do with Beltran?

<i>At least the Mets have rocked in the catcher department with two of the arguably best catchers ever; and Tom Seaver was great. But everything, bleh.<i>

Just prejudiced nonsense there. Seaver is part of everything, peeps.

oh here's a list of all-time team for the Mets

That is an all-time team, It is not the all-time team.

piazza had his best games in LA, not NY.

A contention that doesn't exactly erase his vast contributions in New York, does it?

Bobby Bonilla certainly had his best games in Pittsburg, not NY.

See above.

Bonilla had to play with ear plugs because the NY fans were so mean to him. That qualifies him as an all-time Met? geez.

No. I imagine the writer was thinking of his contributions as a player.

Edgardo Alfonso was just ok. Wasn't he on the mets for only a couple seasons?

Are you guessing here? No and no.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/a/alfoned01.shtml

keith hernandez and daryl strawberry are the only decent position players.

No, they were much more than decent. They made 13 All-Star Teams between them.

hojo had a few good seasons. he was ok.

No, HoJo had a few years in the top ten in MVP voting. He was excellent.

and then there's gary carter. i never liked him. he was in his prime when i was in the middle of grade school. he musta done something really dumb to tick me off.

Yeah, that's the logic. You didn't like him, so he must've earned it, though you can't decide why.

And whatever it was, it clearly demonstarated that he was a poor player.

Lastly, from Met-defender Adam, in a comment made in January.:

I will give the Mets some credit. At least they are trying. Things could be worse. They could be the White Sox and either not try at all.

Best record in the American League.
