I was actually looking through google to see if this bebo thing was legit and I came across your blog. Wierd way for me to stumble on it but you solved my problem none the same.

It seems to be a fairly new thing going around the net, but I'd be cautious about it. The company is also known for data harvesting (i.e. - gathering your personal information to sell to marketing companies). Whether they state it or not in their Privacy Policy section, your info IS INDEED being sold off to third parties. It's easy for BeBo (or ANY company) to "claim" that their servers were hacked into. To me, Privacy Polices mean nothing these days on the net.

I guess there's pro's and con's to it all, but most folks who have tried it did indeed notice an influx of unwanted spam in their e-mail inboxes. I'd also be weary of leaving my home address, home/work telephone and cellphone numbers on something like that.

a friend of mine found out that her friends were receiving e-mail invitations to join that bebo site from her. the problem was that she didnt send out any invitations to anyone. something collected the information in her eudora address book and automatically sent out bebo invitations to all her friends without her even knowing! even if its a random virus, its still somehow connected to that bebo site because they want you to sign up with them. i dont trust that bebo site whatsoever. like that other person here said, i think they just want to collect as much information about you as they can for marketing reasons!

The comments mentioned here convinced me to leave the service. I just changed the post here by adding a strikethrough on the original post and deleting the URL. Thank you to all those who shared the exposing of Bebo.

Dude, that bebo thing is pure evil, evil, evil. It's a legitimate online address book service that's actually a pretty good concept. Kinda like how Google.com's Gmail is a hot thing for keeping track of your e-mails. Nevertheless, the company that owns and runs the Bebo site is a notorious marketing information company too. Bebo seems to be a "front" they use to gather you and your friend's personal information. By joining, you've just given them all the info they need to bombard you with marketing spam, phone calls, text messages, etc.

And like that Gina person above said, there's something going around that's harvesting info from your own e-mail address book and sending out phony invitations to everyone in your list to join Bebo. Evil, evil, evil place..... help spread the word!

I've had about ten people sending me messages inviting me to join beBo, I find it really annoying. I normally just put in fake addresses like Peter Pan Land, because I'd prefer to give my details to my friends when I see them, not over an internet site that might not be legitimate.

Why is everyone complaining? Of course its a scam, if anyone had bothered to read the terms and conditions they would have known that. Bebo may be shit but its a hell of a lot better than sms.ac- which has really got a lot to answer for.

A bit of a worrying site if take a look through it carefully. I particularily reccommend you have a careful flick through the testimonials!!!!!! Very eye opening. A very clever site that is in placing laughing in your face. However not quite sure why they would jepordise such a profitable and professionally finished website. Which makes me even more concerned about this site. Spam etc is far less worrying than sharing unconcentingly PERSONAL information that is being encouraged i.e journals (which are accesible by others without your concent). Also some very deceptive method being employed which was my initial alarm bell. By this im talking about sign up and password anomolies. Be Warned!!!

What is the point of "bebo" and other things like this. How can someone make money (this has already been said, but) when there are no ads on their site, just by collecting peoples "PERSONAL" information - they sell it, of course.

Anyone who does sign up (and doesnt cancel it immediatly after - after youve cancelled it bebo is doing an illegal activity (kind of like MS products :D) if they keep your info, at least then you can sue!), is completely stupid, because if you are good enough friends with someone and you want them to know your new address, you would surely just keep in touch with them, because if you have no idea how to get hold of them, whats the point of giving then your new details anyway!

if you want to keep in touch with old friends, just ask them for a PERMANENT email address - eg like mine (brian.maher@mindless.com) - or a webmail address which doesnt change if you change ISP's.

One word of advice - ok, 2 words...

STEER CLEAR!

What is all the fuss about?

Me and my friends (and their friends, and their friends etc) have been using this and have had no unsolicited emails. The whole point of a service like this is to get a functional service that thousands of people are using, then sell advertising (or sell subscription which is ad free)

If nobody uses it will die, come on jump in :)

Having read this page I don't trust Bebo anymore, but I will continue using it, with the difference that I won't invite more people to join without warning them, for two reasons:

1. I don't mind being sent spam. In a way it's kind of funny how 98% of it never makes it to my inbox.
2. What was the second reason? Perhaps it was that I think Bebo is useful, or that I haven't noticed an increase in spam since I started using it. I can't remember.

Anyway...

I can confirm reports that invitations have been received from people who weren't sending them, but I can't be bothered to go into the details of my own experience.
What was the other thing? Oh yes, Bebo does have adverts.
And now for some personal advice, from me: If you receive invitations to join Bebo, don't assume they were actually sent by your real friends (or total strangers, as the case may be). And secondly, it sounds like Bebo has some how been harvesting e-mail addresses from people's computers just by those users visiting the bebo.com website. If you are concerned about this sort of thing, I would recommend that you download Firefox and use it as your main browser, instead of Internet Explorer. Bear in mind that some websites can only be used with IE, for example Windows Update (although that's not really a website in the normal sense) and therefore it may be useful to download and install ieview which lets you switch quickly and easily.

Oh, and in case anybody's interested to know how I deal with it, I recommend MailWasher and Thunderbird. The free version of MailWasher is no longer available for download from MW's website, but since the licence allows everybody to distribute it freely (without modification) I can give you a copy if you contact me at alex.atk**s[at]bigfoot.com. (replace *s with 'in')

OK have you selected wat state you live in. e.g. I live in the United Kingdom. A list of the counties come up, I pick yorkshire. And a list of schools or colleges, in your case pick what college you go to and join the group your friends are in, and chat c y a l8r

Some of that stuff is very serious. Is there any way any of this can be proven? If so, is there any way that bebo can be held to account? I presume that they are effectively above the law and can operate with impunity in terms of privacy violation and abuse because they are located in another jurisdiction. Is this right?

If so, there is a real need for a similar operation that will come under the Irish Date Protection laws.

My School blocked it too..but there's a way round it. As long as your Javascript is still enabled, you can go to www.netevade.com or www.proxii.com and type it in there. It worked on my web server - all it does is use a proxy or something to let you on. My dad [total computer geek] has assured me it's all safe, so I'm contented.
On the topic of spam, I am SO SICK of the 'join me on bebo' messages. Right now they go straight *ping* into my junk email box. But I love it anyway. It's so neat and at the same time quite spontaneously awful.

when i was on bebo i was sent an email with a link to an illegal video of animals being skinned alive and mistreated, and it was very distressing. i complained and the whole bebo mail service was shut down, and now you can only forward an email 5 times. this does not solve the issue though, you can just copy and paste the link into a new email. i dont think this was sufficient, they havent sorted the problem at all.

i have not been able to confirm Bebo as the source but it is 99% probable that both me and my friend recieved a VERY nast virus from someones profile on BEBO!

we have a network and my friend mostly plays games and goes on BEBO and similar sites...

He got a virus that after over a week of intensive attack is still present in some form on his system.

as soon as it was discovered the network was unplugged and all computers were tested

nothing was found so his computer was quarantined and the rest carried on as usual

because he had no net access i said he could use my computer but not to go on "dodgy sites" he swears he only went on BEBO profiles and youtube

i have used youtube a lot and nothing has happened before and you have a lot of controll with a BEBO page meaning you could imbed a virus into it.

at this point i am one step away from a FULL WIPE of all affected systems.

this virus is good enough to get round AVG, Norton and several others.

Does anyone use the bebo address book system? You can send out a request to all your friends that you are updating your address book. Your friends go to a unique URL and enter their contact details. Once they enter their contact details, they become part of the system. So if anyone in your network updates their address, you will be automatically notified. And if you update your address, all your friends will see your new information. A nice system to keep things up to date.

Alright, im a member on bebo and have been for over a year. I think its fantastic!! a great way to find people you have not seen or heard from in a long time. I see everyone has their own opinion on here.. however "dont diss it till you try it"

I see someone mentioned that all their contacts in their personal email got a invitation to join bebo.. DUM DUMS.. thats because when you sign up, you MUST put your email address down.. then it ASKS you for the option of your email password so that it can have access to all your contacts and invite them to join. you guys are all acting as if its spam! Which it is totally not..

Also The answer to how bebo makes money.. SIMPLE.. there are adverts all over bebo.. i jump on everyday,.. and everyday there is some DIFFERENT ad.

i been on bebo since 2004 and ive enever had any phone calls etc from marketers or any such person. i think bebo does do sht that people dont allow but they keep it on the downlow because if it did get out people would not join bebo you see? well thats my thoughts anyway. :) c yas all.

For those who say that Bebo is great, and if you don't like it don't join, my personal experience says otherwise. I had never heard of the site, been to it, know anyone on it, when I started getting up to 12 emails an hour from them saying that I had new "friends" and "updates". When I go to the site, I have no profile anywhere, so it's not like a friend signed me up without me knowing. They just got ahold of my email address (my REAL one) and are now spamming the sh*t out of it.

Attempts to stop this have been useless, and it looks like I may now have to change my email address, the one that I've had since 1996. Thanks, bebo, go f*ck yourself.

now i have to add my id to my friends id.

Bebo caused me so much embarrassment in the last 3 days. I think the only way to get rid of them is to block them. I cancelled my membership and that didn't do one bit of good. In my opinion, they are relentless spammers and should be knocked off the web.
