Burj Dubai 800 meter tall skyscraper

A 800 meter building called "Burj Dubai" is being built in the United Arab Emirates. That's just HUGE. To compare, the Sears Tower is 443 meters. It's to be completed in November 2008.

This photo was taken by me in March 2005 from Chicago's 346m high Aon Center. I photoshopped in the Burj Dubai for comparison.

Wow. That thing is huge. Don't show the photo to Mayor Daley. He'll want to double the height of the Trump building.

The illustrations on skyscraperpage.com are interesting.

Look at the fancy lake leading up the Burj Dubai. ooooh. aaaaaah. And how about the palm trees on that arched landscape around the building. ooooh. aaaaaah. Though that cloud image is weird. I understand it's done to dramaticize the height of the building, but it still looks foinky.

I like this bird's eye view. The use of pure white on the top of each tower component is kickin'. Though this illustration doesn't give a good idea of how tall Burj Dubai is.

Now this illustration gives a good idea of how tall this mofo is.

I don't like how cities build this super tall skyscrapers when everything else in the city is average and below-average size. I think that's where Chicago really excels. The Sears Tower looks like it belongs in the skyline. Chicago has the best skyline in the world. Any vantage point makes Chicago superior: north, south, east, west. It doesn't matter Chicago is the best. Places Dubai have their one tower and that's it. There's nothing else to complement it. Just a bunch of pretty palm trees.

moose,

that first link is like a postcard from the 1920s predicting the future.... "in the year 2005, buildings will look like this"

the second link is nice because it shows how the building is built around a triple petal.

and yeah, that third link shows how awkward the building is in the context of the much much smaller buildings around it. And yeah, good point about how chicago's skyline is the best from all directions. I challenge anyone out there to say there is a better skyline from all four directions.

"I don't like how cities build this super tall skyscrapers when everything else in the city is average and below-average size"

Are you mad? Dubai Marina alone has over 200 skyscrapers between 20, 40 and 80 floors...

Dubai is the biggest construction site in the world right now. I think your comment is rather misplaced... ha ha ha! ROTFL!!

Here is another link to some great areal photos... Remember, these pictures are already soooo old... http://m.rtijn.info/dubai/marina/2005/04/palm-jumeirah-from-1500-ft.html

follow skyscrapercity.com for the latest pics and updates and you will see Dubai certainly has everything going for it..

The tower mentioned in this thread is only one of 3 announced super tall buildings!

And with this, Dubai hikes to rank 1 in my favorite destinations list. Just check out http://www.pbase.com/bmcmorrow/dubaiaerials&page=all for other high rises in the city of Dubai. Way better.

Personally, I love Dubai. Its just what the world needs to see the future by. Dubai is just what I would imagine a futuristic city to be like. The Burj Dubai is just a new and innovative building in a new and innovative city. I don't think it looks out of place. You people are just straight trippin'.

Dubai is a nice place to visit. Its safe and relatively small so you wont be lost. It also has great shopping malls. However, living here is a different story.. I've been here for around 14 years and dubai has changed 180* ... The city is EXTREMELY expensive now and prices of everything is just reaching the moon. If you're rich GREAT life awaits you here. If your avrage then dont think about making money because you'll spend it all before you know it ;)

Dubai.......... my hometown..... where i was born and raised.Amazing simply amazing.

I am an international Student.... here in a U.S college.....

Never thought Dubai would be so admired here....

(Note: some reatards here still ask me........ oh your from middle east?.... you guys have camels as a means of transport?....... urrrrrrrrgh)

When will they learn!!

Posted by: Mansoor Iqbal on Oct 30, 06 | 11:18 pm

After yesterday's fire and subsequent deaths and injuries in a Dubai tower of only 30 stories in height, I can't help but wonder how emergency situations will be handled in an 800m tower.

And no, people in Dubai do not ride camels, as Canadians don't travel via dog sled.

I suppose (in context) Americans would travel by buffalo -

IF THEY HADN'T KILLED THEM ALL!

It's against the law in the UAE to get pregnant out of wedlock. The government puts the mothers in jail, and then take the child from the mother when its born. The child is then adopted to another family, and the mother is deported after serving her jail sentence. What sort of society does that. None in the western world anyway. This place might have huge amounts of money, but its still a third world country. Avoid it like the plague. There is huge censorship by the government - similar to the Nazis during WWII. Avoid this place like the plague. It's also one of the most dangerous places to drive a car. Too many Muslims who have no safety culture and rely on INSHALAH, which translates into god willing. In other words, drive like an idiot and whatever happens, it is the will of ALLAH. Avoid this place like the plague. You've been warned!
