what time period did G.I.Joe cartoon series take place?

The G.I.Joe cartoon series aired from 1985-1987, but what time period did it take place in? The present? The future?

I had always pictured it taking place in present time, but someone told me that he thought it was in the future. What do you think?

i have the answer for this one.

G.I.Joe takes place in present if the Armed Services budget was 10 times as large.

Everything about the show suggests its modern day except for the funky guns and rifles that everyone uses. They shoot out lasers instead of bullets. I bet the government could come up with this weapon if the budget was increased tenfold.
