20 Reasons why the TV show "Deal Or No Deal" is exciting

The strategies of the "Deal or No Deal" producers used to make the game show more dramatic:

1) Dramatic Stage
Host Howie Mandel stands in a quiet back room with 26 sealed suitcases numbered 1 to 26. One of those suitcases contains ONE MILLION DOLLARS. As he walks out of the back room explaining the game, he enters a huge arena filled with yelling people and flashing lights with the camera zooming around. Not only is the stage very impressive with its darkness punctuated by dramatic lights, but they totally contrasted that with the quiet start.

2) Repeat the phrase "ONE MILLION DOLLARS" over and over again
It seemed like Howie couldn't get enough of saying this phrase.

3) Audience involved
One person from the audience gets their name called and they are the contestant for the game. So the crowd is extremely hyped up from the start. Why just have the contestant already standing there at the start when you can have the crowd all juiced up cuz one of them might be picked.

4) Pick a good contestant
Surely they must have done a thorough job screening the potential contestants, because this one was very good for the show. A young grandma that looked to be in her 30s was able to reach both the old crowd and the young crowd. She was wearing this crocheted shawl which looked gramma-ey, but also sexy. She was very animated and had lots of things to say. No duds on this stage.

5) Vanna White factor
The premise of the game is that in the 26 briefcases there are dollar amounts ranging from one penny to one million dollars. The amounts were something like 0.01; 1; 5; 10; 25; 100; 250; 500; 750; 1000; 2000; 5000; 10,000; 20,000; 50,000; 75,000; 100,000; 250,000; 500,000; 750,000; 1,000,000.

The contestant starts by picking one briefcase. That is her briefcase for the rest of the show. She then picks five more suitcases for them to open up to see what she did not win. As those briefcases are opened, the dollar amount is taken off the list, so you can see what her chances are of winning.

Now instead of just having some boring suitcases sitting there. Or some boring digital board. They have beautiful models holding each briefcase. Just like Vanna White turned the letters on Wheel of Fortune, they are bringing the human element into it.

6) Vanna White factor pumped up
If one Vanna White is good, then surely 26 must be great!

7) Models with names
They could have just kept the models nameless and just have them open the briefcase to show what's inside. But each time the contestant picks a briefcase, the host Howie Mandel calls the model by name to open it up. A really nice touch by the producers. This way viewers can develop their own favorite models. Fan clubs can be born. In fact, the official NBC Deal or No Deal website has a gallery of all the models.

8) The evil character
As with any good guy, having a villain only develops more depth and drama to situation. In this case, it's the BANKER. DOOM DOOM DOOM! The banker has to pay the money that the person wins. The banker offers the contestant a guaranteed cash amount to abandon the original briefcase and quit the game.

Actually, I was quite surprised at how much the banker was offering throughout the game. He surely overprices what the actually risk is.

9) The evil character in dark mode
How to make the evil character even more dramatic. Let's not show him. Only have him in a dark silhouette.

10) The evil character up high
Notice how the banker is not sitting off to the side of the stage. Oh no. He's sitting the highest place possible on the stage. This makes him seem that much more powerful and untouchable.

11) The evil character silent
When the evil banker makes his offer to buy out the suitcase, you never hear him talk. The mystery drama-a-fied! He calls the host Howie Mandel to make his offer. It's a bit annoying, because you want to hear some dark deep voice. But there's a reason why they dont' make him talk.

12) The phone call drama
While Howie is talking on the phone with banker, Howie will make these faces like, "wow! I can't believe how much you are offering!" Which only servers to enhance the drama. How much is it?

13) The stop red button
If the contestant wants to end the game and accept the bank's offer to buy out their suitcase, they just don't merely say, "I'll take it!" No, they have to hit a red button. And the red button isn't just sitting there. It's protected in a clear white case, so it takes the contestant an extra step to it hit. If the contestant is thinking about ending the game, he/she has to first lift up the clear case making it more dramatic, "Oh she is thinking of ending it. Will she hit the button?..."

But part of me thinks that the red button could somehow be even more dramatic. I don't know how. But somehow.

14) No trivia for the stupid people
By having no trivia, stupid people don't feel left out.

15) Mathematical odds for the smart people
But if you are a smart person, you're not left out, because the game can be very interesting to try to calculate just how much risk is involved with not taking the bank's offer.

16) Commercial pauses
A standard in game shows, right before they see what's in the next briefcase, they cut to commercial break to tell you what's inside. (I'll tell ya, I didn't change the channel, because I didn't want to miss a second!)

17) Bring in the family
It's not enough to have the contestant agonizing on stage about what to do, let's bring in the family too. This adds more depth to the contestant's personality to see their family and friends.

18) Crazy family
What's better than a crazy contestant? A family that is even more crazy! The husband was up dancing all around to each development in the game.

19) Family causing conflict
In addition to adding depth to the contestant's character by having the family on stage, there's the extra element of drama as the family could argue with her to take the bank's offer or not. Do you go with your family? Is your family wrong? This has the potential to become very Jerry Springer with the family throwing chairs and such.

20) Greed
Even if your chances of getting the one million dollars are small, if that dollar amount is still being shown on the board, more often than not people will continue to go for it. It's part of the stress of being on stage with all eyes on you. You can't wimp out! Yer on national tv. Go for it!

Howie Mandel said, "There are two elements playing in human nature, most people don't see the opportunity come around, so they say, 'This is an opportunity. I'm going to go for it. When am I going to get another shot to maybe go for it, even though this money is right in front of me?'"

All 20 of these reasons is why this game show kept me on the elliptical running machine for 50 minutes yesterday (normally I'm only on there for 20 minutes max). My legs were spaghetti afterwards.

And a weird wild card bonus point:

Weird habits of the host
As fans of his Bravo series know, Mandel has a strong aversion to shaking hands. "I still don't shake hands," he says. "I'm all right with the hugging, it's just the hands I have a problem with. It's the petri dish that we carry.

"But the producers said, 'We don't want to deal with that. We don't want to talk about your O.C.D. on this show.' I don't think it was obvious that I didn't shake one contestant's hand. I hug, put my arm around, but I can't shake hands. It's just me."

Now there is the drama of "Will the contestant try to shake Howie's hand?!"

After reading your posting I watched it on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It was really entertaining.

We were yelling at the family. We were yelling at the contestant. We were yelling with the crowd.

"DEAL"
or
"NO DEAL"

Anyone else notice that the initial offers from the bankers are always really bad?

the fact that this show is on EVERY DAY will be its downfall. anyone remember "Millionaire"? people will get burned out on this show... fast. i'm already burned out on it, and i've never even seen it. well, i saw the beginning of it the other night. it's so flashy and gimmicky and marketing-y. just play the game! stop with all the flashing lights and music and half-naked girls! that's why i like board games. they are made of simple materials, like cardboard and plastic. you have to invent your own homegrown excitement yourself. NOW THAT'S INTERACTIVE.

Posted by: laura k. on Dec 22, 05 | 11:24 am

"weird habits of host"

I don't refuse to shake people's hands, but i do refuse to open public bathroom doors with my bare hands when exiting. I always grab a paper towel and open the door with that. I do the same at work. I know of at least one person that doesn't wash up after taking care of biz-naz. How gross!

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com on Dec 22, 05 | 3:26 pm

LOL near Laura K! "I'm already burned out on it, and I've never even seen it ..." HAH! I'm with you Laura! I'll pass.

Regarding Howie's hair, it's always been extreme [remember the wild afro-eque hair from back in the 80's?] The shiny bald head is pretty extreme on him too. I think he needs to find a happy middle ground.

Posted by: Tom on Dec 23, 05 | 6:23 am

right, the afro. that was sort of a trademark look for him. now he's gone totally 180 in the hair department. was he starting to go naturally bald, or was he dating himself with the afro?

i was at the gym this morning and i heard an old lady telling her personal trainer about this show.... "its called deal.... or no deal" she said very slowly. it was cute.

Posted by: lisa on Dec 23, 05 | 11:06 am

About Laura's comment regarding Millionaire... Laura, that's why they made this only a week-long event. They may bring it back for another week or so later, but I think the one-week deal shows that they learned from Millionaire. And if/when they do bring it back, please try to at least watch one episode from start to finish before saying you're burned out on it... If I tuned in when Howie said "we're going to a commercial," that wouldn't be a good first impression either...but that's not the whole show. Give it another chance. :)

Posted by: Jacob Kuntzman on Dec 27, 05 | 5:04 pm

oh, it's only on for a week? yippee! phew. i am so over the reality show "phenom."

PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I CAN FIND THIS SHOW AT? I WATCHED IT TWO DAYS DURING THE HOLIDAY AND THOUGHT ON YESTERDAY I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET IT ON CNBC AND IT WASN'T THERE. TELL ME WHERE I CAN WATCH THIS GAME AT. ADA

Posted by: ADA on Jan 03, 06 | 4:54 pm

Ada, this show was only on Dec 26-Dec 30, 2005. It was only meant to air for these five days as a special. Maybe if you wrote NBC, they would bring it back.

Posted by: spudart on Jan 03, 06 | 5:24 pm

It's a regular show on Australian tv :D it's been going for a couple of seasons. The max prize is only $200G tho. I've never seen Howie, but I bet our guy is more fun.

Posted by: Rowdy on Jan 04, 06 | 1:16 am

i watched this show the other night on CNBC. It was nerve-racking, but i couldn't change the channel! I had to see how much money she won.

I HAVE TO SAY THIS! The show is rigged! At the episode that i was watching. So fake. The contestant was an actor. The people in the stands were actors too. Everyone had that silly, little actor glow to them. Does anyone know what i'm talking about? Certain actors have this annoying glow to them. The studio audience was full of them.

I have done professional photography in the past. I have worked with professional models and non-models. The difference is huge. It's strange. Models just have a certain presence in front of a lens. And I'm not talking about beautiful men and women. Models can have every day average looks. But all models have a certain presence to them. Many non-models look frumpy in front of a lens no matter what you have them do. The studio audience at Deal or No Deal was definately full of models and actors.

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com on Jan 04, 06 | 12:35 pm

I've only seen the first USA episode of Deal or No Deal, and I thought they might have been actors too. The lady just had too many quick cute one-liners to say. And the husband was a little too outgoing.

Actors don't appear nervous in front the camera. Non-actors usually always exhibit some degree of nervousness.

I think deal ya no deal is better than other serials because every moment of deal ya no deal is interesting.

i love your show saw it the other night for the first time and me and my boyfriend loved the show our heads were hurting just by seeing the guy turn down some big amounts of money. how does one get on the show

Is the audience made up of pre-screened potential contestants and their family members, add some 'fillers' to fill up any remaining seats

I read somewhere that any one already pre-screened as a potential contestant would be in the audience with their friend/family and everyone has an equal chance to be called as a contestant.
Is this true?

I googled my query but got a bunch of differing and incomplete responses.
Thanks

My BIG question is... Please tell me how I can become a contestant on the show. It would be absolutly amazing!! Not to mention extremly fun. Thank you.

The mathematical probability for the average winnings on the show are: $131,477.54. (source) The deal or no deal algorithm to figure this out is: E(E(X|Y))=E(X). where X is the random variable representing the value of the briefcase held by the player. Y is the random variable describing the briefcases open so far.

As far as comments about the game being 'rigged', while it's always a possibility, I just don't see it.
And hey! How 'bout that lady [the blond] who's husband 'fired' her, [she worked for him.]
She won $407,000 and could have won a million had she played on as she described she would have.
Ouch!!

I love this show. I too am one of the television watchers who sit there yelling at their T.V.s to either take the deal or not. I have been told that they can't hear me!!! Hasn't stopped me yet. I have read up on the concepts of this show. The "drama" effects - not showing it everyday but for "special" times and days. It's kind of like a "treat" for the TV world.

how do I get on the TV show

was not able to get to page to guess which case has the $10,000 in it
please advise

Posted by: LEONARD WINDISCH on Mar 28, 06 | 5:11 pm

As a behaviorlist I agree with your thoughts why the show is exciting. But as a trainer I need to say that this is the most rigged and heavily produced game show I have seen in my young 35 years watching tv. I hope everybody understands that the program is only designed to get you to text and follow the program so at the end of each airing the million dollar case is cashed in by the show producers.

Posted by: Christopher Porter on Mar 29, 06 | 10:31 pm

Well you can enter the $10,000 Lucky Case Game online for FREE. So I don't understand why a person would even pay to text.

Posted by: John on Mar 29, 06 | 10:47 pm

I agree you can also enter on line. But the text factor is a major source of income for them. This is only one aspect of their revenue forecast. Do not get me wrong I think the game is very well designed to get you to watch but you have to admit the "perfect" set of contenstants on it with the "perfect" support group leads you to believe you are watching a model show. So far there has been military personnel (very patriotic right now), female boxer living with her mom, a couple whose wife never been out of the county etc . The extreme of each scenario is too much. To be honest the only real emotion I saw was the father giving up all the money chances for their children but again somebody work out the odds that the next boxes he calls work their way from the lowest amount on the board to his 400k in the case. Plus which producer in their sane mind would focus more on the money that the guy lost than the decision to go with his kids. I tell you if it was real than the kids are feeling so bad right now that one has to wonder if the show is all worth it.

By the way go check out Unaminous and see if it is all what it appears. When a show that highlights outcasts from mental treatment one has to wonder how far we are away from "Running Man".

One may ask why I watch, because I find behavior so interesting to watch and find it interesting how emotion scenarios can be manipulated through the tv medium.

I am not saying it is wrong or bad. Just like wrestling is entertaining so are these type of "pseudo game shows". But when I read emails from real people from real problems putting their dreams and hopes in a show run by hidden banker and a comedian I stop to think maybe we have as society need to start issuing some new disclaimers in our tv watching.

Odd choices by producers show they don't care about the contestants

I agree with you Christopher, that show you mention was quite odd. Here you have a soldier (or Marine or something) who has the chance to get something like $93,000 but he's still got a 66% chance of getting like $300,000 or $400,000. They bring his two young daughters on the show and the dad starts crying, the kids are crying, because they haven't seen their daddy in so long. The host treats their reunion like nothing, "so let's win some big money" he says. It's like, hello, you jerk. Let them have their moment and go to commericial. So they eventually do.

They come back from commericial and the kids are telling their dad to take the money, even though he's got good odds to win more, he tries to explain to them that he could win more. But then he pauses and looks at their pleading confused faces and immediately takes the money.

That was a wonderful moment. The dad realizes that his kids are more important than the money.

But as you say, Christopher, why in the world do the producers decide to open up the rest of the suitcases? He could have ended up winning $400,000. Nice. Real nice. Now the kids must feel like crap, cuz they convinced their dad to take the $93,000 when they could have gotten $400,000.

I certainly hope after the show the father instills in them that money is not everything and turns this into a lesson for his children.

As for the producers, they obviously displayed in that show that they care more about the money, and more about the drama rather than the persons on the show.

SPUDART agree with you 100 hundred percent. The show is exciting and well produced and great concept but I think they can do all that while maintaining important family and community values. One would hope that a creative producer could in fact combine both. Much like "Who wants to be a Millionaire" did when it first aired in the UK. Here is a producer that mortgaged his house and risked all for his belief in his quiz game. Exciting format without sacrificing values or putting the "game" ahead of people.

The shows concept is unique...but after tonight I have stopped watching. I also have a lot of friends who are no longer watching....Please note NBC...the reason for so many people abadoning ship is the nauseatingly purposeful long, overdrawn commentary with 'grandma', 'the kids', explaining (litterly for 10 minutes) 'where the contesant "now stands" after opening the previous suitcase.' ect.. Although building the suspense is perfectably acceptable and should play a revelant part in any decent game show this goes WAY BEYOND the pail in blantant annoyance and in streaching the viewers patience beyond any acceptable limits!!!!!
I think it will work against you in the long run NBC!!!

I think it is rigged as well..well kinda... All the talk seems scripted and how the audience chants on cue seem rehearsed. I think the Banker knows what's in each case beforehand...if he does that sucks, but if he doesn't then it is fair...It is an exciting game, but I could do without the scripted talk and banter...also seems odd that on one show the guy wanted enough to buy a Hummer and then they jusy happened to have one behind the door....same thing with the guy who happened to say his daughter wanted a pony and poof there's a pony with the next deal????!!! Doesn't seem right..

There's not much of reality televison that REAL. The one's balls to the wall! What number do you want? Here's the offer, do you want it or not? Now if only they decided to run a summer season it will be perfect.

Had a question about the models --- there's a surprise --- anyone know of a site other than the official NBC page where one might see the ladies in the various outfits they've worn?

GONZO GUILT!

Two words sum up this show nicely:

electronic-ink

Check out www.eink.com and you'll see how it's easy to rig a show like this. The cases each have an e-ink display and wireless receiver so that the cases can be updated on the fly.

They may say the amounts are placed randomly, but I don't believe it.You never see three six-figure amounts placed consecutively.Tonight,a woman failed to heed this and walked away with only $500 instead of at least $100,000.

I am a grandmother - currently raising four of my nine grandchildren. I have a wonderful idea for Deal or no Deal. I am absolutely convinced that both you and America will love it, because it is something dear to our hearts. I went on line to see how to send it to you, but there was no new and original ideas catergory. Please e-mail me right away so that I can share this amazing idea with you.

Have a Blessed Day.

Hi. my name is Robert Ross Jacobs. I thrive on change and risk. I left college before finishing my degree to become a farmer and crop duster which I did for 15 years. I survived two crashes, one of which was very bad, but I continued flying. I then at the young age of 39 went back to college and finished my degree in chemistry, and one year later was luckily accepted to medical school. I'm 53 now and have been an ER physician for seven years. While I no longer crop dust, I do enjoy cowboy action fast draw with my single action Colt 45. My friends and co-workers think I've lost my mind since not only have I shot myself in the leg once. I did it twice. Needless to say this was embarassing, since the nearest emergency room happened to be the one I work in. I now use wax bullets. They don't hurt as bad. My motto is "you never slow down you never grow old". I would use any winnings todereduce or payoff my medical school loans.

The contestants are totally actors, I saw the really flamboyant gay guy in the pink shirt on America's Next Top Model as an acting coach. DoND is completely fake.

Read the thing at the end of the show!!

it's completely rigged! Just read and you'll know what i'm talking about!!!!!!!

Posted by: Katherine Lolo on Dec 15, 07 | 10:02 pm

I seriously doubt the show is real. The contestants are such idiots. The banker gives them unebelievable deals and they always turn them down. In reality, no one would turn it down. I've seen horrible odds and then they are offered 200,000 and turn it down. That is simply not reality. If I walked around offering 200,000 or a 1/10 chance at a million dollars, not a sane person would turn down the 200,000. It's fake, period.

Posted by: josh on Jan 03, 08 | 8:07 pm

Tonight a lady had 9 cases left with 4 of them being $1,000,000 cases. In her next 5 picks, all 4 were gone. This happens every time. Nobody ever knocks out all the low cases. They always knock out the high ones. If you watch this show and have any comprehension of mathematical odds, you would understand what I am saying. It is certainly not mathematically impossible for this to happen on several shows but IT IS NEARLY MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN EVERY TIME! What happens on this show night after night has to be a million to one chance of happening. Maybe more.

I think it's cool that Howie is open about his O.C.D. and aversion to shaking hands. That's how he is. It's a mental health issue that's not a disability and he has come a long way in dealing with it.
