The truth behind construction cranes and lightning?

Construction cranes probably have some sort of lightning rod at the top of the crane. Such a huge tall metal object is probably grounded, right? So then is the operating seat, like all covered in rubber or something?

I've been looking into this since you posted this yesterday and I can't find anything! I have had several cranes around my building in the last year or so. I think they're so cool so I've looked at them closely and have never noticed a lightning rod, but I have to agree with your point, there must be one, no?! Also, I'm thinking more along the lines of the tower cranes, not the more traditional one shown in your picture. Those MUST have some sort of lightning rod ... or something!

No need for a lighting rod: if the crane sits on rubber tires, they will insulate you from the high voltage. If you step off as the bolt hits, you'll be fried. Same thing sitting in a car.
