Origin of MLB player photos

Here's a photo of Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano posing during "picture day." It makes me wonder if this is a Chicago Cubs internal "picture day" (for marketing materials) or a MLB.com "picture day." Given the ivy background, I would think this is a Chicago Cubs thing. MLB.com would have a generic background.

But then again a search on yahoo news photos for "picture day" results in other MLB teams.

I'd like to know what cameras and equipment they use. I've always been curious where the photos on the backs of baseball cards come from. And the little bio photos that appear on players profile pages online.

very cool. I've been collecting players' mugshots from mlb.com for the past couple years. It's a daunting task. Last year, I didn't download any pitcher pictures and I didn't get around to downloading about 8 teams.

Here's another behind the scenes photo at photo day. It's a little amusing:

The photo that you referenced has a caption, "Oakland Athletics' outfielder Mark Kotsay holds up a name card saying he won't smile during picture day at spring training baseball" (Yahoo tends to take their photos down after a few months).

It's funny how baseball attracts a range of personalities. I guess any sport does that too. But it's funny how this kotsay guy refuses to smile--even to the point of making a sign. I wonder if A) he's serious and just a grumpy guy B) he's really goofy and doing this in contrast to his personality to be funny C) He just has a dry sense of humor.

I never get those people with dry senses of humor. But they can be funny sometimes, i guess.
