Assuming that the volume of the moon is 2.1968x10^10 km^3 and an average grain of sand is 0.00000000000243 km^3.. it would take about 9,040,329,218,106,995,884,773 grains of sand for spudart to build a lifesize replica of the moon.

Oops.. wasn't consistent with my units. 1 grain of sand = 2.43x10^-12 km3

The graphics are awesome. You should pursue freelance work designing graphics. There's been some classics on your blog. The postage stamp cost increase is one that comes to mind.
Cartoon Network recently aired the Futurama episode where they had to deliver a package to the Moon. Fry was all pumped up about going to the Moon while the rest of the crew was less than thrilled. The moon was a giant cheesey theme park/carnival. It was a very entertaining episode.
moose, i think that episode is from the first season, cuz i saw that episode, and i think i only watched the first season. I really like the show, but i never caught it after the first season. Sheesh, how many times can i say first season in this comment?

This is very interesting and educational. And imagine when people believed the earth was flat. Is this how they pictured it? Did they picture the moon the same way? Hmm.

The main problem i forsee is that half the moon is always dark , and we've never seen it.
I don't know about anyone else , but i wouldn't want to live in a perminatly dark world.
Look at the sucide rate in the poles , it's a lot higher during the "dark season"
I figour you'd get something similar on the dark side of the moon.

so if the moon landed on earth...

Re Izaak:
Actually, the entire moon is sunlit at different times..as it orbits the earth ,it is "tidally locked" ,so the same side always faces us...but as it rotates with the earth, each face is exposed to the sun, just as we are...we just never see those sides from earth..it is actually the "far side" not the "dark side" you are speaking of..
great site btw

My eight year old son just told me how big the moon was. In an attempt to prove him wrong i found your website and a few others that proved him completely right.
In my defense this is not my area of expertise. Will i ever live this down ?
Thanks that's why we love sites like yours after ten minutes of disagreeing you settle the argument.
Just curious - how big did you tell him you thought the moon was?
