I'm the first one to buy Edgar Martinez, Wade Boggs, Andre Dawson, Ernie Banks, Rod Carew, and Steve Garvey. I know this, because those cards used to say "Last sale: NA" but then when i bought 'em the last sale price showed up with how much i paid. I paid $500 for each of these cards, except for Boggs. I think i paid like $808 for it.
I developed a fool-proof system for making good money (play money that is). Buy a 5-pack and sell the cards for at least $11 under their market value. People snatch 'em up like hotcakes. And you make good money over the long haul.
Most people sell either exactly at market value, slight above market, or enormously high prices. A 5-pack is $175. You automatically earn $25 for each card you put up for sale. To break even, you just need to sell each card for $10. So if you sell each card from your 5-pack for $20, then you get $50 profit.
I forgot to mention one more thing. As you sell cards, you keep the ones for teams where you want Hall of Fame cards. (You have to collect the entire roster of a team to get a Hall of Fame card). My undersell technique is all about volume, so you'll have a complete set of your favorite team in a relatively fast fashion. There will be a few players you'll have a hard time getting in a 5-pack. By that point, you'll have so much money in your bankroll from selling cards that you will be able to buy those cards from other sellers. It's that easy. It does take a fair commitment of time in buy 5-packs and putting them up for sale.
I have Sandberg, two Nolan Ryans, Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew (gifted from Matt), and I gifted Don Mattingly to Matt. I bought one of my Ryans for $700. The others I got from completing team sets.
I should note that I made this list on April 19, 2008. Back when there were only 100 cards for every regular player. As of today there are now 400 cards for every regular player.
