Impactful is not a word?

It's highly dubious that "impactful" is not a word. There are no results on google for a definition search on impactful.

We already had this conversation - it's in webster's, and Eliana was kind enough to post the link. :)

I still don't believe in it. In any case it's awkward and I know there are better, more precise ways of saying what it supposedly means.

http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/impactful.html <-- I love this site for double-checking tricky English things! It's the first result on the Google search linked above.

i bet impactfullingly isn't in any dictionary or anywhere on goo machine. It is my hope that this page gets indexed for impactfullingly.

What would the definition for impactfullingly be?

Impactful is NOT a word. It has pervaded the english language since the late 50's-early 60's. It can be found in pseudo-dictionaries. Its use is a linguistic tragedy, much like 'irregardless.'

HAP - I found your comment to be very impactful. Thank you!

HAP, we are best friends now, k?

Posted by: Sarah on Jan 29, 10 | 12:21 pm

Yes, Sarah, very best friends! I knew I liked you because you didn't spell it like more and more dullards are saying it-'supposedly' has turned into supposebly. Hmm, or is that spelled with two or perhaps three b's? LOL. I think I must have some sort of genetic predisposition that nearly makes my ears bleed when people slaughter the english language. My bad, hehehe!

Yeah, "impactful" is not a word -- it's just in the Merriam Webster Dictionary of American English. ;) So unless your an OED snob, yes, impactful is now a word in American English. Some people have gripes over new additions to the dictionary. (One of mine is "ginormous." In my opinion, it shouldn't be included unless the editors are also prepared to include "ridonculous"!) But "impactful" is not as garish as the aforementioned, and I have no problem with its integration over the decades.

I believe you meant "redonkulous"

Posted by: sparx on Sep 07, 10 | 4:54 pm

Wait. Andrew, i don't see impactful in the Merriam Webster Dictionary of American English. If you search for impactful, it just gives you the definition for impact. No mention of impactful. I don't think impactful is in m-w.com.

However, impactful is on urbandictionary.com. I like the first definition. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=impactful

Sparx: Yes, it's "ridonkulous" with a "k"... but also with an "i" (as in "rIdiculous") I think. Thankfully, we can't yet confirm this one in Websters...

Posted by: Andrew on Sep 07, 10 | 6:00 pm

redonkulous is not in the dictionary! That's just ginormously redonk!

Posted by: spudart on Sep 07, 10 | 6:09 pm

Nope. It's redonkulous with an e.

Posted by: sparx on Sep 08, 10 | 9:12 am

SPUDART: "Impactful" IS in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Here's the link: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/impactful It's a variiation of "impact."

What's a word?

Sure wish those English gurus could come down off of their high horses and understand that we the people make a language and not them. If it has been around since the 50's, then usage has made it part of our language regardless of what the elitists say or want.

The word "impactful" can be found on page 1131, middle section, 6th word down in the Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English Language [Unabridged], 1993, Merriam-Webster Inc., Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.

Happy to help! :)
