Philly-style pizza mystery

Philly has its own style pizza? Does it involve putting a pizza inside a hoagie?

Please help us solve this mystery by giving your speculation about what is a Philly-Style pizza.

Check out Philly's Best on Belmont - there's a sign that states "Welcome to Philadelphia" when you walk in, and I am sure they can explain it to you! Personally, it reminds me a lot of NY pizza.

The way that I understand it is that Philly-style pizza is a "white pizza", that is, it contains no sauce. The classic Philly-style is topped with roast beef, mushrooms and cheese, like the pizza version of a Philly cheesesteak.

This is quite a blog post, Spud, as simply Googling "Philadelphia style pizza" or "Philly style pizza" doesn't turn up much.

I did find this lovely image from the Mushroom Council:

Thanks Mushroom Council!

Just noticed the bottom of that sign where it says Hoagies [and] Seafood. What kind of a place sells hoagies, Philly-style pizza AND seafood?! Icky! (no offense, Philly Style Pizza).

According to the Mushroom Council, yes. I agree with Tom, however, that a Philly style pizza in its most basic form is essentially a Philly cheesesteak on pizza bread. The mushrooms, I'm assuming, are an add-on. Kudos to the Mushroom Council for posting a nice pic!

I would imagine that a Philly-style pizza would have lots of spit, thrown pieces of chewed gum and is delivered to you accompanied with a slew of cuss words. (referencing the worst fans in all of professional sports)

Don't make me laugh their is no philly stlye pizza

New York has the best pizza in the world!!!

Its etiher New York thin crust pizza
Or its Chicago deep dish pizza!!!

I imagine the serviece would be nice in philly "city of brotherly love" philly is a nice clean country laid back city.

In New York you mite get a bad attitude with your pizza delievery, a curse word or 2 it not tipped good, but the pizza will be the best.

Oh yeah New York style chessesteaks with provolone and mayo are the best.
Its a sub not hoagie you not in the south, well maybe in hillbillyphilly.
New York is the only city know for delis. So try a pastrami on reye for Katz deli in the city Manhattan.

Philly style pizza don't make me laugh

We in Philly say "Philly-style pizza" to refer to any pizza that is "bad" or "inedible." Okay in all seriousness pizza in Philly is pretty abysmal and has no particular style. The cheese is mostly fake and tastes like a mayonnaise/Elmer's glue concoction. The tomato sauce tastes like store brand ketchup and the crust is nothing more than warmed up wonder bread that has been shaped into a disk.
