Best last place team in baseball

Baseball fantasy leagues can be too much work. My brother and I have our own league every year--just the two of us. We get all the best players. It's fun. But this year we are mixing it up.

No players. Just one team.
Instead of picking players, we each pick a team. One team. We track the number of points that team gets.

Only the last place team
The teams we can select from are the last place teams. MLB has six divisions, so there are six teams to pick from.

Once a month
We select our team once a month. Whatever six teams are currently in last place, that's the grouping we get to pick from. For the start of the season we started with the last place teams from 2008. Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals.

This blog post will serve as the place where we comment about our teams progress. I was thinking of making it a new twitter account for this, but that would be hard to see who posts what. This is easier.

Here's how our first draft went. We submit to each other the name of the team we want. If it's the same name, then we submit our second choice.

Erik and I both selected the Detroit Tigers for our first pick.
For our second picks we both selected the Baltimore Orioles.
Then finally we nailed it with our third pick. Erik choose the San Diego Padres. I went with the Seattle Mariners.

I forgot that Ichiro was injured. Oops. The main engine of the Seattle offense. But that doesn't seem to have hurt the Mariners much, as they are currently in first place for all six teams.

After three days, here's the standings:
Seattle (matt) 77
Pittsburgh 75
Detroit 68
Washington 62
Baltimore 43
San Diego (erik) 41

I find it funny how my team is in very first, and erik's is in very last. Makes me laugh. Ha ha.

LEAD CHANGE
The Khans (Padres) overtake the lead from the Mashers (Mariners) for the first time this season.

Khans 205 47
Mashers 193 14

Only Team One (Detroit) has more points than the Khans.

Pirates all the way, baby!

Very cool idea.

I would have went with Detroit first, too!

Padres have a tough division. I think it'll be a close fantasy league.

Matt's Mariners are now in 5th place. Your team stinks, Matt. ha! Erik's Padres are in 3rd. Somehow Baltimore has vaulted itself to first.

NEWS UPDATE!

The Khans (Padres) are in first place above all teams including the robot teams while the Mashers (Mariners) are in dead last amongst all teams.

Ooooooooouch.

1. Khans (San Diego) 450 38
2. Team Two (Baltimore) 419 15
3. Team One (Detroit) 412 45
4. Team Four (Washingto 384 33
5. Team Three (PIttsbur 374 19
6. Mashers (Seattle) 370 28

Our teams are now in last and second to last place. Though the Mashers have a death grip on last place.

1. Team Two (Baltimore) 685 56
2. Team Three (PIttsbur 624 48
3. Team One (Detroit) 614 22

FYI, if we are keeping true points or yahoo points.

FINAL APRIL POINTS
Mashers' Mariners true points 707 vs. 671
Khans' Padres true points 779 vs 730

So the Mashers have 36 less points.
The Khans have 49 less points.

Ooops that should be April, not May.

We didn't record the standings from the month of April 2008, but here they are as of the morning of May 3, 2008:

Mighty Mashers 1116 57 3 20
Amazing Khans 1094 28 4 28
Windmills 991 28 2 1

I'm betting these teams will be far below the allstar teams we had in the past. Although right now the best team in baseball is the Toronto Blue Jays. Here's the top six:

Toronto Blue Jays 1049
Los Angeles Dodgers 961
New York Yankees 959
St. Louis Cardinals 940
Boston Red Sox 905
Tampa Bay Rays 902

Y'know, rainouts stink.

My team got ZERO points yesterday from a rainout. And I'm not sure when the Angels are going to replay that game. It was the last game in the series and the Yankees are playing Boston today. So I just lost an entire day's worth of action.

4. Team One (Detroit) 1160 65
5. Team Three (PIttsbur 1071 22
6. Team Two (Baltimore) 775 0

KHANS WITH 67 POINTS! That's officially the most points scored in one game this year (from what i've seen).
