17 Crazy Crayon names that are official core colors

Fuzzy Wuzzy, Outer Space, and Bittersweet are just a few of the standard Crayola crayon colors released over the years. These 133 names are considered to be a "core color" by Crayola. Hard to believe that Razzmatazz is considered a core color. But it is! What a wonderful world Crayola has colored for us.

From the official list of 133 standard Crayola colors, here the 17 that stand out as being more wacky.

ColorHex CodeIssuedNotes
Atomic Tangerine#FFA4741972What makes this Atomic?
Banana Mania#FAE7B51998This color has a slight red-tinge to it. Maybe it's an embarrassed banana
Beaver#9F81701998The only Crayola color named for an animal
Bittersweet#FD7C6E1949This is the color of something that is Bittersweet
Cornflower#9ACEEB1949Is cornflower this color?
Dandelion#FDDB6D1990Are dandelions this color?
Fuzzy Wuzzy#CC66661998Fuzzy Wuzzy?
Jazzberry Jam#CA37672003Is this the color of Jazz?
Laser Lemon#FEFE221972Renamed from "Chartreuse" in 1990. Interesting that yellow would be a laser color. Have you ever seen a laser beam that's yellow?
Mauvelous#EF98AA1993Because mauv is just a marvelous color
Outer Space#414A4C1998Wow. Outer space has a color?
Purple Pizzazz#FF00CC1990Crayola likes names with many Zzzzs in them.
Razzle Dazzle Rose#FF48D01990Four Zs!
Razzmatazz#E3256B1993Four Zs again!
Unmellow Yellow#FFFF661990Describing a color by what it is not. Very philosophical
Wild Blue Yonder#A2ADD02003Heh
Wisteria#CDA4DE1993Wisteria? What is wisteria?

After writing this post, I found that Crayola has special coloring pages explaining each of their 50 most popular colors. Wisteria has its own page. It explains:
Wisteria is a plant that grows as a vine. It grows light purple flowers in the spring or early summer. Some wisteria plants can be 25 feet tall. The color wisteria is a peaceful color. It makes people feel better and helps them to be calm, sometimes even sleepy. Calmly color this wisteria flower with a Wisteria crayon.

Burnt Sienna will always be my favorite - and I recall Cornflower Blue, not just Cornflower. Hmm... and some of these just sound like Sweet Adeline quartet names (just trust me on this one); I can totally see "Mauvelous" or "Jazzberry Jam" singing in four-part harmony.

And I could make many inappropriate comments about the color Beaver. But I will not; this might be a family forum.

And now that I'm looking at the main list - I'm totally opening a restaurant/bar and calling it The Neon Carrot.

Cornflower and Dandelion are correct. I think Wisteria is a purple-ish flower, so I'll buy that too. As to the rest, who can say. I think most of those would be totally subjective. I've never heard of a "jazzberry", I've heard of a raspberry and even a snozberry, but jazzberry? Maybe it's something from the Rain Forest.

I wonder if children use these names when coloring...such as" hand me the Razzle Dazzle Rose." In my limited experience I tend to remember them calling similar looking colors by the same name like..."hand me that other pink."

I always used the given name of the crayon "Please pass the Indian Red". I was a strange kid. Now I'm just a strange adult

Jazzberry Jam was the name of a Jazz group in NYC that was founded by my father who named these four original members, "Jazzberry Jam" in 1995 (a NY State corporation). They were smooth, bluesy and spicy!
Somebody took the name from the group to use for the color at Crayola.
Neither the group nor Crayola bothered to credit the creator of the name. Boo !
