donuts vs. doughnuts

* doughnuts have dough. i.e. Dunkin' Donuts (yes, ironic, it should be Dunkin' Doughnuts)
* donuts are those light airy donuts that have no dough. i.e. Krispy Kreme. They are called "donut", because they "Do nuthing".

More etymology! Well...kinda.

The word "Doughnut" is American English first recorded in 1809. Doughboy for U.S. soldier was in use during the Mexican-American War in 1847, said to be from resemblance of buttons on old uniforms to biscuits of that name.

I think "Donut" is simply another form of "Doughnut", probably created by someone "simple" after hearing the word.

Look for a "Doughnut" feature on my web site soon!

Krispy Kremes have dough. what else would they be made of?

Posted by: laura k. on Jun 02, 04 | 8:44 am

They are made of air. Just air.

if they were just made of air, you wouldn't be able to see them or touch them. they would be gaseous, not a solid. you cannot defy the laws of science.

That is the mystery of the Krispy Kreme. It's like the equation x squared +1 = 0.

you are full of ... air.

x square + 1 = 0 was the origin of negative squared numbers that Descartes called imaginary numbers. Plus the zero just looks like a donut.

listen people! it is DONUT not doughnut. this is as clear as day. just because buttons and dough exist from the 1800's doesn't mean we must do the same sh!t. we are progressive people, living in our modern donut era... now the rest of you... GET OVER IT.

If you are the Donut King, then surely I am the Doughnut King. I love a good doughnut from 1832. Who wants one of them new-fangled donuts? I heard they make them in square shapes now. Viva la DOUGHNUT!
