Do not use the Chicago seal

You will be fined between $25 and $200 every time you use the Chicago seal! If you sell 10 tshirts with the Chicago seal, you could get fined from $250 to $2,000. Yeee-ouch! Chicago takes our seal VERY seal-riously.

1-8-100 Private use of seal unlawful. No person shall fraudulently forge, deface, corrupt, or counterfeit the seal of the city, nor shall any person, other than the duly authorized public official, make use of said seal. Any person violating the provision of this section shall be fined not less than $25.00 nor more than $200.00 for each offense. (Prior code 2-10)

Let's see if I get fined for using the seal in this blog post.

Can they do that? Isn't a public seal.. public? Doesn't that fall into the same area as using an image of the flag?

Do I have any more questions?

Ah yes, but a seal is no mere logo or flag. A seal's purpose is to attest to the authenticity of something. It serves as solid evidence. A seal cannot be used around all willy nilly. It's very seal-rious!

what if I got a Chicago seal tattoo? What would the City of Chicago do about that?

I always wanted to get a giant bald eagle tattoo across my enitre back. (What's the point a getting a tiny tattoo on your ankle? If you gonna tattoo, then tattoo!) A year ago I decided that a ruler tattoo would be cooler. Now, there's extra motivation to get a City of Chicago seal tattoo.

Oooh! I bet they'd confiscate your [body part where tattoo was located]!

I KNOW YOU CAN GET IN BIG TROUBLE FOR TAKING THE PRESIDENTIAL SEAL AND MAKING T-SHIRTS. DO NOT DO THAT!

Posted by: Joe on Dec 15, 08 | 2:52 am

The seal was designed in 1905, and any work authored before 1922 is in the public domain, meaning it is free to use.

I don't know why anyone would want to put it on a tee shirt. It's a horribly dated seal that's really quite offensive. The baby in the sea shell at the top represents the first white person born in Chicago... that's CREEPY!!!
