From an email I just received:
* Stay tuned, please...
One I've been using lately:
* As usual,
Prolly only useful with german speakers, but I use the first one now and then.
You could use the german expression "Gruss" in an english version. Because the german "Gruss" sounds very much like the english "Bruce", I suggest:
* Sliante (Scots Gaelic)
* Slan (Irish Gaelic)
They both mean goodbye
* Peace & Love,
* Peace, Love & Happiness,
"Catch ya later" is a good one.
I just want to say that this is the most useful page on the 'net for me right now, and I'm thrilled it's here. Thank you so much for making this!
Now, should I add something before I leave? Yeah, I suppose that would only be fair.
* Hope all is well,
Hey guys, thanks for all your help, i was jus lukin for good salutations when i came across this on Google. Anyway, no-one's said:
* ASTALAVISTA BABY
* Love, Hugs, and Sloppy Kisses
* Keep your stick on the ice.
In hockey it is the first thing your taught to do while playing the game.
Red green (Darren McEwen) adoped the phrase and made it his own salutation in 'the red green show'.
Its probably not a very good salutation if you have to explain it, but for people know the meaning/reasoning its great.
Steve smith, not darren mcewen. I was mistaken.
Red Green! That rules! And yes, Steve Smith plays Red Green.
I think anyone who's even heard of hockey would understand "keep your stick on the ice". I'm going to start using that.
* Always, forever, plus a day!
* Wuv you...kissy, kissy (mmmm….and some touchy, touchy)
* Hugs and Kisses and sexy wishes
* Lovingly and Lustily Yours,
* Back At Ya With The Hugs
* See you in the inbox, kiddo
* And now I’m tired, G’nite!
* ASTALAVISTA BABY.....
* Be happy or sea feliz (in spanish)
* Smiles and laughter,
* Stay well
* Peace and long life
* Live long and prosper
* I'll be back
* Safe travelling
* Get me a mars bar while your out
* Drive safely
* Don't come back now, yer hear!
* Your not welcome here any more
* Later Vader!
* Cheers & Beers
* All the best
* Stay on the road 'cos its going somewhere nice
* Watch this space...
* Can I touch your butt?
* Do svedaniya ("until we meet" in Russian)
* Vsevo dobrovo ("all the best", also Russian)
* Y'all come back now, ya hear?
* Happiness is a choice,
* Lustfully yours
* Over & Out
* Take care, comb your hair
* Too bad, so sad,
* Be good
* All good, all the time
This is great! Thank You for this great list.

Wow. I am very suprised that no one used my personal favorites to ending emails: (at least i didn't see it)
* Thank You (More professional)
* Thanks (More Personal)
Oh, by the way... "Word to your mother" just might be the coolest way ever to end a letter.
* Word to your Mother,
* In loving service,
for your biker friend:
* keep the rubber side down,
for the Emma Goldman fan:
* love and anarchy,
for the friend who grew up in Sarajevo:
and the one who grew up in Quebec:
* Always in my thoughts,
* With purest love,
* One Love,
* Peace and Blessings,
* Impatiently awaiting your responce,
what does it mean if a letter ends with lxlx?
maybe "lxlx" means love and kisses?
I use this for evening e-mails:
* ...sleep in heavenly peace...
* Chow (ciao)
* Till next time
* Catcha later
* Buy for now
* kiss kiss bang bang
which has now become a movie. haven't seen it.
here's some in Portuguese (from Portugal, not Portuguese from Brazil), since there are already some in other world languages:
* bjocas (short for beijocas, kisses)
* fica bem (be well, in the lines of live long and prosper)
* adeus (goodbye)
* saudades (I´ll miss you or I miss you)
* até amanhã (until tomorrow, just used it because of the things the english writing world doesn't use such as é ã and nh which is the same sound as spanish ñ)
* It's been real
* it's been nice
* it's been really nice
this is a great site!
*peace, love, and vitamin c
*see you later, sweet potater

I like a variation of toodles:
Or maybe that's:
how about these
* yours till the amusment parks
* yours till the water falls
* yours till the toliet bowls
* yours till the coco puffs
Coco puffs! LOL! I like these! Clever!
* peace and progress,
* over and out,
* until we meet again,
* yours until the crows fly and the flies crow,
* you are the weakest link,
(German for Mit freundlichen Grussen/Grusse)
George Washinton to his favorite subordinates:
* Your obedient servant,
* Forever and a day,
* Forever and a day...or two,
Sarah and I used to say that.
As a child of the 70's, I always liked to say:
* Peace, love and Bobby Sherman!
I close me letters with:
* Big hug and an ass squeeze
* All the best for the rest
* Love always
* Keep smiling
* That's me...(your name)
* God bless u best for the rest
This is the best!!!! I now have a whole list of fun ones to use. Keep it up!
* It's now or never,
* Greetings and salvations.
* Peace, Love and Rock 'n Roll
I'm sending a letter to a serviceman oversees and I loved:
* May the force be with you.
Appropriate, don't you think?
Haha...I always liked
*With kind affection,
*Keep the pimp hand strong,
* always true
* wilen out
* Out like a fat kid in dodgeball
Great site- It really helped in class when the teacher wanted us to have an original letter closing.
Here's one of mine:
* keep on rockin' in the free world!
The absolute best I ever heard sad to say was from a movie, Kuffs (Christian Slater).
* Hugs and kisses on all your pink parts!!
Gee, that's Spanish, not Spanich!
* Un Beso!
* take care
* keep on keepin on
This was always said at the closing of her show. Sally Starr was a regular 70's icon in Philly--til she drank too much!
* Love, Luck, and Lollipops!
* yours til banana splits
* yours til the kitchen sinks
* yours til niagra fall
* yours til butter flies
a few of my personal favourites.

* Grace and peace,
To whom this may concern,
I would like to thank you for this list. I was running out of ideas.
* Till the world caves in,
* Breast Wishes, Sal & Manila

this list is comedy. not sure i found the appropriate closing i needed, but great just the same.
* In peace,
* Fa, or *Fa Soifua (both are samoan, meaning "bye" and something like "take care"- soifua is 'blessings')

* Caught up in the rapture of your love
* THANKS FOR HAVING PITY ON ME LAST NIGHT.
* Peace, Love and brown rice!
* Fair Winds to Ye!
I like ending with:
Because it usually gets the other person to smile.
I was wondering if anyone knows of anything else other than "Yours, sincerely", "Yours, faithfully", anything "with regards" for formal letters. It doesn't have to be THAT formal, but reasonably polite.
I absolutely love this list! I used "live long and prosper" and it was perfect! Here's one that was used on me today...

* Bye for now
* So long

I heard a relative say this:

Translates to "Until gossip do us part"
* buenos nachos!

* Erromenon se hoi theoi diaphulattoien.
Greek for: May the gods guard your well-being.
Excellent for ending a letter with to someone you are unfortunately having to cut out of your life for any number of reasons...
Only had to use it once fortunately.
I searched for letter endings in google and here I am. Great page!
Let me add something in italian (since I'm italian)

I noticed this in a terrific little biography of Benjamin Franklin, with which he concluded a letter to one of his many lady-friends:
I had rather conclude abruptly with what pleases me more than any compliment can please you, that I am allowed to subscribe myself:

This is one of my favorites:
Carry on bravely ...
Can we talk about the use of the word ‘Best’ as a closing line in current correspondence? It seems to be the latest trend. But it leaves me annoyed and not eager to try. What the hell does it mean? Best. Best WHAT? Best intentions, Best wishes, Best Buddy, Best Dressed or Best Bowel movement? It’s so utterly cool that it carries no warmth. It’s not about wishing the other person the best of anything but rather an embarrassing attempt by the writer to include themselves in some phantom ‘it’ crowd. It doesn’t even look smart on paper or email. In fact it looks incomplete and as if the writer could not think of anything more intelligent to write. My advice is to return to the old but trusted ‘Sincerely’ until something worthy of its replacement comes along. After all, you are either cool or you are trying to be cool.
I don't think this one is up here yet

* May fun characterize your evening,

* I hope you choke,
* A killer with the perfect weapons
* Sucking you dry,
* A daemon with a smile of gold,

Does anyone know what it's called when you use a semi-colon for the salutation and a comma for the closing? There are three other types of puncuations; mixed which is the colon and comma; closed which is comma and comma; open which is you use nothing. There is a fourth which is the semi-colon and comma. I need to know what that is called. Any help on this would be grateful!!!!!
done and dusted,
Well I have actually saved these letter endings in my browser. I am not a very communicative person and I always have problems with this. I am interested in official letter endings, they are more difficult to handle.
(editor's note: Gordon, your link is going to get deleted every time you leave it in the comments)
I always use
lovelovelove and a daisy flower,
Here's one I've used--an obscure reference to one of my favorite movies, "A Christmas Story". When Dad gathers up the remains of his "shattered major award" and says:
remain with best regards
c u l8ter (- alligator)
bb (bye buddy)
greez (my own...)
lg (lovely greetings)
Love (and other indoor sports)...
Till death do us part,
* Have a nice day
* Vänliga hälsningar (Swedish)
* You still here?
* Kiss, you know where
* Sun shine on you!
Hugs and smiles,

Thanks for calling
You look good!
The grand climax:
My heart is ever at your service [Shakespeare]
Run for your life!
I want my Mommy
I've seen that face before
My heart aches
Write me fast
Till the bitter end
End this rant
Sealed with a Kiss
Not so fast!
Hello & Goodbye
Send cash only
You may already be a winner
Knit me a sweater
Make me feel better
This ain't no crank call
Catch you on the flip
No funny stuff
You rub me right
Don't look back
Follow your heart
You've been warned
Scratch and Sniff
Holier than thou
The check is in the mail
Take me home
Run for cover
Live and kicking
Singing the blues
Here's looking at you
Get back here!
Come on home
Miss you much
Cry me a river
Wish I could smell your smell right now
The heart knows no distance
You can do it
Don't give up
You are my heart
From now on...
That's the breaks
All the news that fits
Don't touch my tomatoes
Rise and Shine
Wash your hands
Do the dishes
Stay as you are
Every man for himself
Straight, no chaser
On the rocks
Mind your manners
Mix it up
Make your mark
Shake your booty
Pull it up to the bumper
Bring it on
Bring down the house
I puke for you
Words aren't enough
I've got your back
Catch me if you can
Love you and now I'm leavin'
Fair and square
I'll race you
Don't forget to breathe
Count to ten
For the record
now we're straight
Look the other way
You forgive me
The pleasure is all mine
Mind over matter

Does it have any significance when a Serbian girl that I met in Belgrade closes her emails to me with "love"? Is that how they teach one to close personal letters as opposed to business letters in Eastern Europe, or may I read the common meaning into it? Otherwise, the e-mails are very warm and friendly.

I think "biz" may stand for "Bises" or "Bise" which in French means "Kisses" or "Kiss". It's often used in sms (mobile written messages) cos it's shorter. People tend to write phonetically -at least in French and Spanish - when writing sms because of space restrictions and "keyboard" unconvenience.

Thanks for your help so far. there are so many, I haven't read them all, but my problem is a little different. I don't like the lady I have to write to, so I don't want to be 'sincere' or 'faithful' I want to question the bi*@!s ethics and get outta there - so how would you sign off?
To answer Alec L ON's question, ( if it's not TOO disdainful for you,), I might use:
Oops - sorry - to answer' Jen's question, I might use

I used to write this to my pals:

Dirt carrots for dust bunnies,
Mouthful of molten muck,
Burning ring of fiber,
Bedeviled by bejeezus,
Touched by an anvil,

Less fun than a barrel full of infected biting monkeys,

That should get you started! Enjoy.

What have I done
I love this site been there added some but it would be nice to kind of have everything that has been submitted sort of categorized and alphabetized and perhaps culled. A lot of rude and stupid things have managed to slip in.
May all your wishes be kisses,
May all your kisses be true.
May you always find
What is best for you.
(thanks Shelley - love it!)
Hmmm - Lucky Lucy - organizing these valedictions is FINE idea - it would eliminate a lot of the duplications.
Does anyone know if there any sort of computer program that could alphabetize an enormous list?
Hey, I found an online alphabetize program

What can I use for an exit/resignation letter in which I have been and witnessed mobbing, bullying and harassment and am leaving with no notice as I can't take it anymore.
Use "Taking the Higher Road" as a salutation.

Dumb & Dumber:
*Goodbye my looove
My FAV for YEARS is from Urban Dictionary:
*I'm Audi 5000. or I'm Audi
An adjective describing one or more people who intend on leaving a particular place. Audi's model 5000 sedan was plagued with a problem charcterized by unintended acceleration, in which drivers' complained that the vehicle lurched forward when their foot was on the brake pedal. In reality, it turned out that the acclerator and brake pedals were unusually close together. This is why Audi 5000 is associated with leaving quickly, because that is what this vehicle did when some old fartknocker hit the gas instead of the brakes

…so i was pretty much like all of us who trip on this great resource—you know—Googling for creative ways to convey the subtle illusion of snappy-hippness with a well crafted closer—but what a great surprise to see all of the smiling mind work and respectful co-op on this blog.
I was in quest of the tidy, organized closers and valedictions list yesterday and while it was hilarious to see the progression over the past 5 years or so, I thought that some of you might like a clean listed version. I added a few. It IS a test to find them. It's the least I could do for the cause.
You can download here:
Very cool! Wish our congress played this well together.
See you at the top!

Thank you WalkFly for editing the list on 11-25-09. Much to my amazement I know a few not on the list. For the most part 19th century. NOTE:"valedictions typically contain the word yours, a contraction of your servant"
..... I remain, your most humble, loyal and obedient servant,
.....I am, Sir, your most humble and obedient servant,
.....This form is occasionally abbreviated to..Your obt svt,
... The phrase et cetera may be used in place of the remainder of the valediction, as in I am, etc.,
.....I beg to remain, Sir, your most humble and obedient servant
,... Adieu, my dear friend, and believe me ever yours very sincerely and with unalterable affection.... From Ben Franklin's essay The Whistle To Madame Brillon
This is amazing!! I can't believe this has been going on for 7 years and still coming.
Here are ones I haven't seen...
