Neat idea, though I think convenience of use might win over quality of sound. When the phone rings, it takes nothing to pick up the handset and put it up to your ear. If you had to put something on your head that covered both ears, it may be more of a challenge...especially when it takes 4 rings to get to the phone.

one day we will have cell phone technology just implanted in our ears, so we won't have to have a physical thing to carry around/lift up to our heads. we will just think "answer" and it will obey our thought waves. maybe we won't even have to talk out loud...we'll be able to just think the conversations. wait, that would be telepathy, which would subjugate the need for "phones" at all. am i getting way ahead of myself? my point is, um......i don't remember.

laura, you're such a subjugator.

Come to think of it, it IS weird that we only use one ear.

we need the other ear for hearing everything else. we are multi-taskers. society demands it.

If you're on the phone for a long time, you probably switch from one ear to the other simply for comfort. While we are designing the new phone that allows "stereo listening", let's keep comfort in mind.

I wonder if we display different parts of our personality depending on which ear we are using on the phone. i.e. using the left ear will enable you to have a more creative conversation. While the right ear will lean towards a more pratical discussion.

My observation has been that it depends on whether you are right or left-handed. Right-handed people hold the phone to their right ear, and left-handed people to their left ear. Even if I've been on the phone a long time and switch ears, it's not long before I switch back to my right ear [being right-handed] because I'm more comfortable holding the phone in my right hand. I used to also think that I heard better out of my right ear, but last time I had my hearing checked, I heard just as well out of both ears.

oh, i disagree. i am left-handed, and almost always use my right ear, at least to start. this is so my left hand/arm/shoulder is free to do other stuff. i always tend to keep my left hand free to do main stuff, while the right one is holding something.
plus, we only switch ears because of the physicality of holding a phone, not because of someone talking into a particular ear. so when we do get the cell phone chips implanted, they'll only have to do the one side. as long as we don't have to hold anything, it's cool.

I think phones should have power doors and locks.

you CAN lock the keypad on your phone, so that if it's stolen, no one else can use it and jack up your bill.
Posted by: laura k. on Dec 29, 03 | 5:49 pm
laura, what does that have to do with power doors and locks?

you're the one who brought up power doors and locks. i was responding to this in the cell phone sense. you CAN lock your phone against trubblemakers. and it's powered. you don't slap a Masterlock on there. it's electronic.
you brought it up!
