New 20GB iPod for $284.99 has color display and is like iPod Photo

Apple just regeared their iPod line. The iPod photo is now the standard iPod. So all standard iPods now have a color screen that can display photos. Why buy them from Apple, when you can get them cheaper from Amazon?
ï iPod 20GB: Amazon $284.99 vs. Apple $299.00
ï iPod 60 GB: Amazon $379.99 vs. Apple $399.00.
Plus, you get free shipping and no tax. Woosh!

I've been thinking about getting an ipod, and was considering the ipod mini silver 4GB: Amazon: $189.05

But the new regular ipods would be handy on vacation, and be able to upload a ton of photos for storage on the ipod. There's 20GB of space, plenty of room to dump photos and be able to clear your memory card. You just have to get:
ï the Apple iPod Camera Connector (Amazon $28.49)
Just remember this connector only works with the new ipods (with color display) and the old ipod photo. And it will work with certain cameras.

The ability to dump off photos shot with my digital camera onto the ipod is really tempting.

These prices are based on amazon's price on July 12, 2005. I don't know if they will change in the near future.

Here's what Apple says about the vacation feature:
Traveling with your digital camera? Leave all those extra memory cards at home. The iPod Camera Connector (sold separately) lets you shoot all day, then transfer the pictures from your camera to your iPod, where you can view them immediately. Itís perfect for trips when you wonít be back to your computer for a while.

Even though my Canon PowerShot S110 Digital Elph is not on the official list of supported cameras (it's 4 years old), I tried the test apple recommended, and my camera is indeed supported. :-)

I have the iPod mini in silver. We could be iPod buddies! Ha! I love it, but then again I didn't pay for it. It was a gift. I recently bought the Bose SoundDock for iPods [that wasn't a gift]. The combination is unbeatable.

I just edited this post, before I mentioned that you also need the the Special Dock (Amazon $37.05<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=artiwu03&l=ur2&o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />). But according to this apple page, you don't need the special dock.

Thanks spud! Mine will be here today. (the 20GB photo!) Has anyone tried the photo connector with a Canon S45? According to their test it says it should work, but I guess I could always return it if it didn't.

Man oh man. I was in London back in March. I could have used this ipod photo. I forked over $120 to get two 512 MB Compactflash cards from Office Max (60 bucks for each card).

I already had a 256MB card. If Amazon offered the $289 ipod photo in March, then I could have used that $120 to invest in the ipod rather than the stupid memory cards.

I even did research to see what external hard drives I could use to store my photos. Nothing was cheaper than $150. That's a 20 GB hard drive. It has slots for all the different memory cards.

So it's:

$120 for two 512MB compactflash cards.

$150 for a 20 GB external drive that only stores photos (4.9" x 2.9" x 1.2") and requires an AC adapter, so it's not portable. the screen is black and white. you can't preview your photos. the screen is for navigation only.

$289 for a 20 GB ipod photo that stores your photos. (2.4" x 4.1" x 0.63") and is completely portable with 15 hours of battery life. It has a color screen so you can view your photos easily. And you can podcast (download radio programs to listen to). Oh yea, and it plays your music obviously.

At least the memory cards will last longer than the ipod. Don't the batteries in those things only last a few years?
