Join my 2006 "Beat the Streak" league on MLB and you could win $20

MLB.com has a game called Beat the Streak where you try to put together a hitting streak to beat baseball's legendary record of 56 games. Choose one player every day who you think will get at least one base hit. If your player gets a hit, your streak is extended. If he fails to get a hit, your streak ends and you can start a new one.

Be the first eligible participant to get a hit in 57 straight games and win $100,000 in cash.

Join my Amazing League to see if you can beat me. To get a password, contact me. Make sure you leave your address in the form, so if you win, I can mail you twenty bucks.

I once got an 11-game streak last year. Think you can beat that? If you get first place in the Amazing League, you get $20. It's totally free to join my league. I'm offering the twenty bucks out of my pocket just to make it interesting. Last year, we had about 10 people in the league.

2001-2005 Beat the Streak Leaders
43 games 2005 Mark Gray
42 games 2005 Tony Deceanne
40 games 2004 Ken D'Introno
40 games 2005 John Quinlan
39 games 2004 Robert Rushton
38 games 2001 Stanley's Streakers
38 games 2003 Derek Coderre
(Don't worry, these people were not in the Amazing League. We topped off at something like 13 games)

So far, here's the players in the league:
wells123: Lisa Wells (my girlfriend)
spudart: Matt Maldre (me)
dascenzofan: Erik Maldre (my brother)

wells123 has the longest streak so far with five games. I had four going into yesterday's game, but Victor Martinez let me down with a 0 for 4 performance, despite his .364 average.

And what is up with dascenzofan? He's only got a two-game streak. Get yo' game together!

Posted by: spudart on May 08, 06 | 9:31 am

yea, i'm really bad at this game. I currently have a four game streak going where I haven't got a hit. And the four players are quality starters: Andruw Jones, Lyle Overbay, J.D. Drew, and Ichiro Suzuki. Today I have Brad Hawpe going.

Oh! that's cool. We can have an award for the person with the most consecutive days of no hits. Dascenzofan is leading with four games.

To available for contention for this award, you must pick a legitamite player (No Neifi Perezs!) and that player must get zero hits for the day.

Thank you Ichiro! My current streak now is now at six. That ties the league's season high streak by lisa. Can I break it tonight? I'm going with Ichiro again!

Posted by: spudart on May 15, 06 | 10:08 am

PSSSSSSYYYYYCCCC! I didn't go with Ichiro last night, instead it was Blalock and he extended my streak to a league leading 7 games. Tonight I go with Miguel Cabrera. He went 11/31 the past seven days, and yesterday he went 2/5.

Posted by: spudart on May 16, 06 | 10:08 am

yah and now you are beating me :(
i'll have to surpass you, it would be a shame if you won your own $20

Posted by: lisa on May 16, 06 | 12:50 pm

Wooo! Cabrera got a hit extending my streak to eight games! Tonight it's Mark Loretta's turn.

I see that Erik (dascenzofan) is quietly building up his streak to new heights with four games. That's a new PB for him this year.

There's someone outside our league that is leading all of current streaks with 26 games. I'm rooting for this person, because I want the top person with 28 games to go down. I don't like that person's name. I'm not even going to mention it here.

Posted by: spudart on May 17, 06 | 10:01 am

Double digits. I'm now onto 10 games with Miguel Cabrera going 2 for 4 last night. I have him going up again tonight.

It's too bad that everyone else's streak in our league yesterday ended. I would like to see someone topple 10 games.

Posted by: spudart on May 19, 06 | 9:20 am

i am not happy. my streak stopped at 5. I originally had Marcus Giles as my pick. He went 2 for 4 yesterday. I should have left things alone.

But since i was going to the cubs game yesterday, I figured yesterday morning I would change my pick to a cubs player so i can root them on during the game. I went with Juan Pierre. He went 0 for 5. During the game, I thought that I didn't actually make the change; that i got distracted by something else and didn't actually make the switch to pierre. Unfortunately, I did officially go with Pierre.

So not only do the cubs lose the game 5-3 with Neifi Perez trying to bunt in the 9th with two outs and runners on 1st and 3rd, but I lose my Beat the Streak streak.

I did a switch out for today. I had Vernon Wells in, but he's now 7 for 25 in the past week with going 0 for 4 yesterday. So I put in Derek Jeter again, which makes me really nervous, because it would be just like Jeter to screw with my 11-game streak

Posted by: spudart on May 20, 06 | 10:18 am

Our league's top streak topped out at 12 games. That is now the streak to have a chance to win $20.

I had Jason Bay going yesterday and he stopped my streak. I'm not surprised, because he went outside the standards I was using during the streak. HERE'S THE SECRET TO MY 12-GAME STREAK: I always looked for players that had two hits the day before, and at least 10 hits during the past 7 days. My theory goes that if a playerer has only one hit the day before, he's not hot enough. If he has three or more hits, then he's too hot and he might figure to take it easy the next day. And the 10 hits during the past week is just a general rule of thumb for an overall hot hitter.

There you have it, that is my secret. If you want, you can share your own secrets here too. Let's all try to improve ourselves so we can have a chance at getting 57 games and $100,000.

HERE'S MY SECRET:

always start Geoff Jenkins.

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com/blog on May 22, 06 | 4:54 pm

Geoff Jenkins. And what is your longest streak?

Posted by: spudart on May 22, 06 | 4:57 pm

I just started to apply the Geoff Jenkins Technique. We will see how it goes in the next 9 days.

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com on May 22, 06 | 4:59 pm

New Player: take316 has joined our league. He is my cousin Peter Kreten, aka the Punisher. Welcome!

Posted by: spudart on May 25, 06 | 9:24 am

My six game streak ended yesterday, because Arod decided that getting two walks yesterday was enough, so he didn't bother getting any hits going 0 for 3.

Posted by: spudart on Jun 02, 06 | 10:16 am

Welcome, Pete Kreten. I hope that you get a 56 consecutive hit streak going so that I can then say that I had hoped you would get to a 56 consecutive hit streak going.

I have Carols Lee going tonight. I gave up on the Geoff Jenkins Experiment.

Posted by: >>>>>>>>>>>> on Jun 02, 06 | 3:51 pm

I have Joe Mauer going tonight. He falls in my scheme of 2 hits the day before, with over 9 hits in the past week.

Posted by: spudart on Jun 02, 06 | 4:06 pm

And today I play every Cubs fan favorite, Jacque Jones.

Posted by: spudart on Jun 06, 06 | 9:18 am

Someone outside our league has a current streak of 39 games! That is the 5th best streak ever in the history of the six seasons of Beat the Streak!

Posted by: spudart on Jun 12, 06 | 10:06 am

Whoa! Lisa has a current streak of nine games! If this continues she'll have 11 right at the time of the all-star break! One away from tying the lead of 12!

Posted by: spudart on Jul 08, 06 | 12:31 pm

How many people (a ballpark figure, no pun intended) do you think play MLB's beat the streak game per season and at any given time? I'm trying to get a feel for how much competition is out there. Thanks so much for your help! Good luck to you all!! I hope someone wins the $100,000 soon!

Posted by: Jonathan Cohen on Jul 20, 06 | 11:10 am

My $20 is looking pretty safe so far. My highest streak is 12 games. Who wants my twenty dolla!?

Posted by: spudart on Jul 29, 06 | 8:33 am

Jonathan, I have no idea how many people play the streak. I bet there are A TON of people. To get on the top 30 standings board, you need 29 games. Plot out the number of people who have 39 games, then 38, then 37, etc. You'll see that more and more people get streaks of 30, then even more of 29, continue that out and you'll see a long tail. What's even more interesting is that none of the top 30 people are able to get a ssecond streak higher than 12 games. So that means you have to be really luck to get 29 or over. To have thirty people get over 29 games means there must be a ton of people playing.

In the past few years nn my league where I've had around four to five people playing a year, we've had our top streak get up to like 15 games. So to get 29 would be incredible. To have that many incredible streaks means there has to be alot of people playing.

If you find a rough number somewhere, perhaps from a quote in an article from a MLB rep or something. Please let us know.

August 6th was the last day of the year to start a streak to achieve 57 games. If a streak was started today (August 14) and lasted to the end of the season, it would be 49 games.

Posted by: spudart on Aug 14, 06 | 11:04 am

that's kinda sad that there's essentially a deadline in the beginning of august to win this competition.

Posted by: e Maldre on Aug 14, 06 | 11:06 am

Now to beat my streak of 12 games, and win $20, the last day is September 19th to start your streak. (that is if don't top 12 games myself).

Today I go with Jermaine Dye. 12/27 the past week with 2/4 yesterday against Detroit. And today he faces the Royals. He's a shoe in for a hit.

Posted by: spudart on Aug 14, 06 | 11:07 am

my highest so far has been a whopping 5. I'm bad at this game and i've been starting a player every single day since april.

Posted by: e Maldre on Aug 14, 06 | 11:07 am

I'm up to two in the beat the streak: home run edition! who should i pick today? can i make it to three? that would be incredible.

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com/blog on Aug 18, 06 | 9:00 am

today i select manny ramirez for beat the streak: home run edition. He is 8 for 12 lifetime against the Yankee's C. Wang with one homer. Plus, the BoSox play a double header today. I wonder if it will still count if Manny doesn't hit a homer in the first game, but hits a homer in the second game.

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com/blog on Aug 18, 06 | 9:03 am

I would think the rules for the homerun streak are the same as the beat the streak. A doubleheader counts as one day. If a player gets a hit in one game, but not the other, the streak continues.

I have not played the homerun streak at all this year.

Posted by: spudart on Aug 18, 06 | 9:37 am

You have three catchers on your roster?
J. Mauer (Min - C)
B. McCann (Atl - C)
J. Willingham (Fla - C,OF)
Sheesh! No wonder there aren't any good catchers available!

Posted by: spudart on Aug 19, 06 | 10:18 am

oh crap. i meant to put that in the fantasy league comments, not the beat the streat comments.

Posted by: spudart on Aug 19, 06 | 10:23 am

I'M UP TO THREE IN BTS:HRE! I only need three more to get on the leaderboard. That would the Maldre achievement of the year if I got onto the bts:hre leaderboard!

Today, I go with the hottest hitter in baseball, Johnny Damon!

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com/blog on Aug 19, 06 | 11:41 am

i have a serious problem with BTS. I should have a 7 game streak going. BTS says I have a 5 game streak.

Here are the players I have picked for the last 8 days.
8/28/06 Carlos Delgado 2 for 3
8/27/06 Carlos Delgado 2 for 3
8/26/06 Johnny Damon 2 for 4
8/25/06 Chris Duncan 1 for 4
8/24/06 Geoff Jenkins 1 for 2
8/23/06 Mike Piazza 0 for 0
8/22/06 Miguel Tejada 2 for 4
8/21/06 Lance Berkman 1 for 3

Mike Piazza did not play on 8/23. He didn't eve step to the plate. I checked the box score from that game. There's no mention of Piazza:
http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/boxscore.jsp?gid=2006_08_23_lanmlb_sdnmlb_1&c_id=sd

That means the 8/22 and 8/21 games should count in my streak! This is a ripoff. I can't believe this. To make matters worse, BTS said I had a 5 game streak going before yesterday's games! How is that even possible. That means the would have counted the 8/22 game and not the 8/21 game. what nonsense is that?

To alot of people in BTS a 7 game streak isn't a big deal, but my highest streak before my current one was 5. This is b.s.
