the city hike

Walking from my apartment in Chicago to Lisa's in Montgomery: Doing one block in three minutes pace (that's not fast, leisurely)...

I will cover the 47.90 miles in 19.16 hours. So with some breaks here and there, it will take me two days with about 10 hours each day of walking.

I've got one of them big spiral bound book map things of chicago. Y'know with the real detailed stuff. I'm gonna xerox all the pages with my path, and then assemble them, and hang them up on a wall at home.

And I could photograph snapshots along the way. It'll be the the "50-mile city hike."

I'd suggest a bike instead, or at least do your hike during a warmer time :)

Where are you gonna sleep?...I think you should sleep on park benches along the way. By the way, why is it always the same people commenting on these things?...who is Tom, Erik, Rose, Laura, and/or Lisa?

who is the mystery #2 submitter? Please #2, share your name with Tom, Erik, Rose, Laura, and/or Lisa. We are friends, co-workers and relatives of Matthew.

I think that's a neat idea. 2 days to get from Germantown to Montgomery huh? It just amazes me how "far" we have come with the automobile and our highway system. To think that 100 years ago it would take a whole weekend to get to your girlfriend's house. That's incredible. What I would like to see in your analysis is more of a comparison of walking time and driving time just to demonstrate the two extremes.

huh, actually that map is for the highways, i wouldn't walk down the highways. I would walk down the trail for part of it, and then through small towns.

i think it would take longer, because you would make lots of stops for photos.

well, actually i don't imagine myself doing this hike anymore. I need to find another location that is 50 miles away. I could walk from my place to my parents on the southside of chicago. The direct route is about 21 miles, and would go through some bad neighborhoods. So I would have to walk in a large semi-circle to avoid those bad hoods, thereby giving me 50 miles. But there was something more romantic about walking to a place far away.

Milwaukee is 81 miles away from me. Too far. The wisconsin/illinois border is 44.90 miles. That's cool. I'm gonna walk to wisconsin! Ok, so once i get up there, I need a way of getting back. Hmmm, I could take the amtrak back.

The closest Wisconsin station is Sturtevant (SVT) 61.74 miles away ($19.00).
2904 WISCONSIN ST., STURTEVANT, WI 53177

The Milwaukee (MKE) station is 84.74 miles away ($20).
433 W. ST. PAUL AVE., MILWAUKEE, WI 53203

Then there's the Kenosha Metra station. It's 58.19 miles away ($5.00).
5414 13th AVE, KENOSHA, WI 53140-3756

Kenosha sounds perfect.
