Remind me to leave chalk in the plaza more often. Walking home after thinking about purpose, these smiley faces greeted me in Giddings Plaza. It would be fun to leave a bucket of chalk with a sign giving kids an idea of what to draw. A few ideas of what the sign could say:
— Draw an animal!
— Draw a smiley face!
— Draw a bunch of happy houses!
— Draw something that lives undersea!
What else would you direct kids to draw with chalk?
When I lived i Ravenswood it was in a courtyard building an occasionally I would draw all kinds of things on the sidewalks in the middle of the night to greet my neighbors in the morning. The ubiquitous happy face was de rigeuer of course and I paired them with puppies, the sun, a box house with triangle roof, tea kettle, house plant, and any manner of shapes, stars, swirls and bubbles

Draw your favorite superhero!
It’s funny you say that, sparx; because just on my walk to work today, there was a drawing of a superhero on the sidewalk. The kids drew outlines of their bodies and then made themselves into various characters. One was a superhero. Another looked like a lizard person.
open draw: let them draw whatever they want
Open draw works too. That could be one of the themes. Often people need a little encouragement or idea on what to draw. Give them some inspiration to put chalk to brick pavers.
