Fold your fast food paper bag into an origami creature, and leave it on the table when you go.

Almost all origami starts with a square sheet. First, rip your bag into a square. You don’t need scissors; just fold the bag and rip along the fold. When you make the square, try to put some of the logo from the bag inside the square. It looks super cool when part of the logo can be seen in your final origami.

Then fold whatever you already know how to fold. A crane works. So does a butterfly. If you don’t know how to make any origami, then I suggest a butterfly.

Fast food is meant to be fast. Eat it, and go. Doing this process with the origami from your paper bag slows you down. It helps you to enjoy the moment.

Practical notes

Minor grease spots on the bottom of the bag are normal and they crease fine. If your square tears mid-fold, you paid nothing for the paper, so start the next one.

Photograph it where it came from

A paper crane standing on a fast food table carries its whole origin story on its wing. Try the garbage can outside too. Tag the photo #fastfoodorigami so the rest of us can find it. (And let me know.)

Then leave it behind. Somebody clears that table, and for a second they are holding a bird instead of trash.

What did your bag become?
