Moving forward, I won’t be posting to Twitter (X), Instagram, Threads, or Mastodon
My blog at spudart.org is my main hub for everything I write and make. I’ll also be using Bluesky for frequent posts. Facebook for occasional posts.
It’s tempting to post on all the major social platforms
I understand the appeal of posting across all platforms:
- Expanding reach: You want to make sure you reach everyone possible. What if someone uses only one platform? You might miss out on those people.
- Boosting discoverability: The more platforms you’re on, the easier it is for people to find your work.
- Easy cross-posting: Copy-pasting or using automated systems makes it simple to post everywhere in just a few clicks.
Why I’m posting on less social platforms
It feels weird when I see the same post appearing on the platforms. See the posts everywhere makes them feel low-effort and not valued. Like, it’s a “let’s blast everything.”
To me, platform exclusivity feels more personal and intentional. When someone focuses on one platform, it feels like their content is crafted for that space and its community. Posting exclusively on one platform feels more genuine. More intentional. Like, this is their house.
If you post the same thing to all the platforms, please, feel free to go ahead and continue doing that. I don’t want to discourage anyone from sharing their work.
The platforms where I’m not posting
- Sorry, Threads. I’m already posting on Facebook. Threads feels like a generic network. Are there actual people who post exclusively on Threads? It seems like the posts I see on Threads are also cross-posted on other platforms. Bluesky feels like it has more of a mission. There’s more excitement about Bluesky. Have you seen anyone excited about Threads?
- Sorry, Mastodon. Just doesn’t feel right to me.
- Not sorry, Twitter/X. Your owner. Your content is increasingly toxic. I’ve stopped posting to Twitter last year.
- Not sorry, Instagram. I have 15 reasons why I don’t use Instagram. I can’t stand the algorithm, the scrolling-scrolling timeline, and the incredibly awful search functionality. Flickr was always the superior service. But Flickr is now a paid site. So I don’t really have a photo-exclusive service to use. I’m not going to waste my time on Instagram.
For me, at this point in my life, posting everywhere is not my cup of tea. I’ll be focusing on three platforms. (Yeah, I can’t let go and do just one, but hey, at least I’m focusing a bit more.)
Where to find me
- My blog is the main hub: spudart.org – where I dive deep into everything I write.
- Bluesky for frequent posts: spudart.bsky.social
- Facebook for occasional posts: facebook.com/maldre
The idea is that everything I write and make goes onto spudart.org. That’s my home. No algorithms, no games. You visit the site, you see everything.
A site existing on its own is sort of an island. I need some sort of social network to tap into. I’m using Bluesky as the public network for anyone to discover my work. Facebook is my private network of people I personally know.
On Bluesky and Facebook, you’ll find shorter posts and highlights. But for deep dives and a fuller experience of what I share, Spudart.org is my mainstay, and I’d love for you to stop by.

Side-note: I continue to occasionally reply to people I know on Twitter. Or if I need to reach out to someone I don’t know online, I’ll at-reply someone. For example, today I found out that Patch quoted me in an article. I wanted to thank the author, so I found her account on Twitter, and gave a nice thanks.
I’m not sure what to do with Flickr. I continue to pay the $72.99/year, because I have such an archive there with a long history.
In the past, I would get a good amount of requests from people asking me to use my photos. That kept me going with the service. (granted, the amount of money I made from these requests never came close to paying for the Flickr subscription)
But now don’t really get any people reaching out to me to use my photos via Flickr. And I rarely use the platform anymore to post my photos.
I am considering taking my Flickr down.
Sounds like a good plan. You convinced me to join Bluesky
I’m looking forward to when you join.
