I actually like the suburbs, despite the normal urban response of hatred. The suburbs are:
* nifty
* peachy keen
* spiffy
* gosh darn special

Being an urbanite, I will say this: they are a necessary evil. You’ll find me there when I have a swollen belly & a minivan. Oh yeah … & an itching for TGIFriday’s. 😉 Nah, they’re not *that* bad.
i wouldn’t call it hatred. i would call it disdain. and, as one who grew up in the suburbs, i can say that. YOU grew up in the city, spud.
burbs are nice. The best burbs are ones that have actually communities. Having a centralized downtown like Elmhurst, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, and Naperville really helps. It’s like a pretend city, but it’s real. Though, I can’t stand it when people from the burbs freak out about driving into the city. What a bunch of scaredy cats… especially when burbian parents don’t let their kids drive into the city. how sheltered.
I never got why we were supposed to hate the suburbs. Especially given how nice they’ve gotten. And what a testament that the U.S. is able to provide that kind of lifestyle for so many. I think that people that complain about them should be forced to dig ditches in the third wold and live in hovels for three years or until they appreciate what they have. I was one of those people that thought that living in an urban area would be interesting, and now I find it the most gigantic and unreasonable pain in the ass. I understand people hating be stuck in some dangerous hood that smells like urine and is littered with condoms-I don’t get hatred of the suburbs-people are so ungrateful for what they have. And don’t give me that mc mansion stuff about uniformity. Do you know how many peope are in the world? There’s no way everyone can be different. Being different for the sake of being different, moreover, is another form of conformity.
