Chicago Flash Mob / Urban Pranksters in Chicago / Improv Everywhere

Go out and act crazy with a group of people! Flash mobs! Weeeeee! Chicago has their own organized flash mob! (In case ya don’t know, a flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.) Chicago’s group did a pillow fight earlier this year:

The main place for information on flash mobs in Chicago is on the Urban Prankster Network on Ning. It’s 607 members strong. Another group is the Chicago Urban Pranksters on Facebook with 274 members.

New York has a flash mob group called Improv Everywhere that has executed over 75 missions involving thousands of undercover agents. They prefer that other cities don’t use the name “Improv Everywhere” as that’s just for the New York group. Oh, those New Yorkers. But they do have quite an impressive resume of pranks. They can be found on facebook, vimeo, and improveverywhere.com.

Tomorrow’s blog post on spudart.org will cover some fun ideas on how to fill out your profile on Ning’s Urban Prankster Network.

I’m rather P.O.’d that the local media has used the name “flash-mob” to the “thug-mugging”/thug-mob actions. Please: send corrected notes, e-mails,etc. to journalists mis-using it. My long-term fear is that though ‘true’ fun/artistic ‘flash mob’ activity is supposed to make people -stop- and -think- and get outside of themselves for a moment-.. the mis-applied term (though it may be ‘technically’ illegal) there is potential for basic “Freedom of Assembly” (without big-brother’s approval, thank you very much) and Expression being subject to arrest when categorized with violent thuggery. Please: contact news sources and have them quick-change the term to differentiate “flash mob” from “thug-mob” < which is entirely more accurate and appropriate.
