Spearmint Peppermint Wintergreen: Triple Threat Match

A thought that has been sticking to me for some time has been why do we have three flavors of spearmint, peppermint and wintergreen? Standing in the gum section of the store leaves me in a bind as to which flavor to choose. Surely there must be some difference or preference among consumers to warrant ten different product lines to carry these three flavors.

Of Spearmint, Peppermint, and Wintergreen…

Why are there three flavors?

Which do you usually buy?

Because they’re all different. Peppermint is hottest, spearmint is slightly fruity, and wintergreen smells like gas station bathrooms according to a friend of mine. *g* No, actually, wintergreen is the most refreshing of the three, IMO. I like them all. Oddly I was thinking about mint flavors just yesterday and why they’re so popular. And it occurred to me that since mint is one of the easiest plants to grow and is, in fact, invasive, it’s probably been ubiquitous in many cultures. I’d also look to cultural differences in preferences for one flavor of mint over another.

mint is popular because it fixes your breath so you can kiss someone.

i think they all do the trick. but spearmint is a toothpaste-y taste, peppermint is a candy-cane-y taste, and wintergreen? who knows where that came from? so it depends on your personal taste, i guess. like i said, i’m all about the peppermint.

I’m with Laura on this one in liking peppermint the best, probably because I identify it with a candy flavor, which neither of the other two come close to replicating. I must admit, Mr. Matt, it disturbs me that you, as an artist, cannot distinguish enough between the three to justify their coexistence. ;o)

Skittles Spearmint is my fave. It’s not overpowering like most mints.
