Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center was showing the Great Muppet Caper this past Sunday. I went with my sister, brother and cousin. We love the Muppets! But who doesn’t? Seriously. Tell me one person who does not like the Muppets.
As kids we had some 18-inch Muppet dolls. Rolf the dog (with puppet mouth), Kermit the Frog (with reporter trench coat), and Scooter (fun to make dance, because he has spaghetti legs and heavy plastic shoes).
My brother told me that he was going to bring the Scooter. What fun! But alas, he did not. Can you believe that?! It would have been so much fun to have that Scooter in the movie theater. Every time Scooter appeared on the screen, I could have shook him up in the air.
And then there was this bozo laughboy a few rows back who laughed at EVERYTHING. Seriously. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. I luv laughing. And we all need to laugh more often. Plus the Muppets are funny-and-all, but c’mon. This was just a bit much.
The constant loud chuckle at every… single… prank… every… single… joke was cute at first, but then it got annoying. (But then it became funny again.) I think everyone in the theatre was thinking, “gee that fellow laughs REALLY LOUD.” Now if I had the Scooter doll with me, I would have stood up, turned to him, and said, “laugh at THIS, laughboy” and chuck the Scooter doll at him.
The great thing is that Scooter’s heavy shoes would have clocked him really good.

As a former movie theatre usher I might have encouraged you to report laughing boy [he couldn’t have been related to buzzer boy, could he!?”> and discouraged you from throwing anything at him, less I have to pull you aside for a little chat too.
If I was sitting in an aisle seat, perhaps I would have done something. But I was smack in da middle. The laughing wasn’t that bad, but it was distracting. But at least the Great Muppet Caper broke the illusion of the movie throughout. Characters would break the fourth pane and start talking about their acting skils and such. After watching that movie I was kinda expecting to see muppets running around the theater and outside. Alas there were none. But if we had scooter, there might have been a flying scooter!
I can’t stand the Muppets. Not only do taxpayers underwrite free advertising for the franchise through public television, the Muppets did what the Evil Galactic Empire was unable to do: They ruined the “Star Wars” franchise. I find it incredible that during the production of “The Empire Strikes Back,” nobody apparently noticed that Yoda sounds like Grover. I half-expected Admiral Ozzel to sound like Scooby-Doo! Looking for crap? Found some crap, I’d say!
@Leigh: Look! A muppet hater! *points* Where’s the scooter doll! I need to chuck it at you! At first when you said they ruined the Star Wars franchise, i thought you were referring to the Muppets bit, PIGS IN SPACE. Actually I would like to see the entire Empire Strikes Back done with just muppet characters. That would rool.
Muppet Star Wars. awesome. I don’t think anyone can take Star Wars that seriously. There’s just too many plot holes to do so.
Scooter’s feet are indeed a heavy rubber material and his legs are plushie and soft. My daughter likes to make Scooter dance. He’s good at that. I didn’t bring Scooter along cuz well it’s was freakin’ snowing/raining the entire day. Scoots was a big too much to travel with me at the time.
Scooter has the super cool jacket that would have helped him in the rain. I’m glad you didn’t bring him, because I might just have chucked it at laughboy.
and you don’t know if laughboy was armed with any Muppet dolls of his own. He could have thrown the news guy with the very pointed nose at you. That coulda hurt.
it coulda been a muppet fight. like a food fight, but instead with muppets.
Until Dec. 30th 2009, I had that exact Scooter doll since the early 80s. My parents’ house burned down on the 30th, and my Scooter perished. I know he hasn’t been in production in like close to 30yrs, but would anyone know where I could maybe get my hands on another one? He meant a lot to me, and I was going to give him to my daughter for her birthday (which was Jan 1st). Thanks guys
