Finding boxes is a fine art. There should be centers where you drop off your used boxes. And then you could go there to pick up boxes too.

sounds like a good idea – there should be like a box exchange place, where people drop off used boxes and other people pick them up. the city should sponsor this.
i got rid of my moving boxes in several ways. first, i gave some to you. 😀 then i cut up a bunch to use as supports when shipping paintings on paper for eBay. a few i kept to store stuff in (then draped cloth over them and used as table-like structures). the rest i had to pitch, after trying like heck to give them away to needy box-needers. but i couldn’t find any.
this is an important issue.
yeah, i tossed a bunch of nice new boxes too. bummer.
