Kodak Charmera shortage: too popular or too scarce?

Image of Kodak Charmera cameras

I want to say upfront that everything I’m saying here is speculation. I don’t know what Kodak is doing. Or what their plan is. All I know is that people are having a hard time getting their hands on the new Kodak Charmera.

If you haven’t heard about the Kodak Charmera, let me get you up to speed. Last week, Kodak released a tiny keychain-sized digital camera. The charming camera shoots 1.6 mega-pixels. It’s cute. The seven different designs are fun. The small size makes it tangible. It’s not about high-quality photos. It’s about having fun with a tiny camera. Like how things were back in the day before digital. You can see why this camera would be popular. They initially sold out of the camera last week.

Yesterday, Kodak announced via Instagram story that pre-orders would reopen at 11:00 PM EDT. The rules were strict: one camera per order, no cancellations, limited quantities.

Screenshot of Kodak instagram story: We're excited to announce that pre-orderes for the Kodak Charmera will start on 16 September 11PM EDT / 17 September 11AM HKT. Important details: 1. Pre-order / orders containing the Kodak Charmera will begin dispatching from 8 October. 2. You can pre-order a maximum of ONE "Single Box" and "Whole Set" per order. 3. NO cancellations are allowed for pre-orders. Pre-order quantities are limited, mark your calendars and don't miss out the chance!

Hooray!

The Great Refresh War of 2025

My brother and I both went online to try to buy one (each from a different location). We were refreshing our browsers like bandits. Just a minute before 10 pm struck (in the Midwest), we both managed to get a camera in our cart.

For me, the single-camera option was available. The 7-pack was not available.

Once I clicked on the “buy” button, I was put into a waiting room to check out.

After about 15 seconds, I was brought to the check-out page. As I filled out the fields for my address, a notice appeared saying:

The product in your cart is not available for delivery to your location. Change delivery address or empty cart and return to store.

Further down the page, it also gave this error:

Shipping not available
your order cannot be shipped to the selected address. Review your address to ensure it’s correct and try again, or select a different address

I live in America, in the Chicagoland area. How can my address not work? How is my address not valid for a Kodak product‽

Frustrated but determined, I emptied my cart and tried again. Same result. By my third attempt, the single camera was gone, but now the 7-pack was mysteriously available. Same checkout dance, same shipping error. I even tried my dad’s address. Nothing worked.

This happened to my brother, too. All of it. Getting the single in his cart. The error. Getting the 7-camera pack in his cart. Getting the error. It’s not just me. My brother even tried putting in my credit card to see if that would enable the shipping. Nope. It felt suspicious.

I went to bed frustrated. But hey, at least I’m not $30 out (or $179 out for the 7-camera set).

The Morning After Explanation

Today, Kodak posted this helpful FAQ on their Instagram story:

Screenshot of Kodak story: "FAQ Why the check out page shows "shipping not available"? -indicated at th announcement bar on ou web- Shipping regions may encounter "shipping not available" error when check-out due to out-of-stock."

I don’t get how they ran out of cameras in literally 3 seconds. Did Kodak made like, just 100 of each camera? What was the real production run? When you limit each customer to just one, I can’t see how you sell out in three seconds

As of right now, there are zero results on eBay for: kodak charmera

screenshot of eBay search for: Kodak Charmera. 0 results.

If there isn’t anyone trying to sell these cameras on eBay, that indicates to me that they didn’t sell that many. You know that people who bought the 7-camera set are ONLY buying the set to sell the cameras online. But yet there are none being sold online. Where are the eBay listings? Where are the scalpers?

A Suspected Strategy

I suspect Kodak is playing a different game entirely. What’s more valuable right now:

I think Kodak is trying to fluff its feathers to convince people they are popular. What’s more important to Kodak at this moment?

Option A: Sell 100 cameras in three seconds and generate “sold out” buzz
Option B: Sell 10,000 cameras over time without the exclusivity drama

Kodak appears to have chosen Option A, and I think I know why.

Being “sold out” makes you look popular. Not being “sold out” makes it look like nobody wants your product.

But lo and behold, here’s the point Kodak doesn’t get. People who are using digital cameras will POST THEIR IMAGES ONLINE AND SAY THEY SHOT IT WITH THIS COOL CAMERA. The results of the camera itself will the promotion that shows Kodak is cool.

But instead, Kodak doesn’t want to get this camera into people’s hands. They’d rather have the empty fame. They’re banking on artificial scarcity over authentic enthusiasm.

The Economics Don’t Add Up

Consider this: how do you profitably sell a digital camera with an LCD screen for $30? You probably don’t. My theory? Kodak manufactured a few hundred units, took a loss, and prioritized publicity over profit. It’s a marketing stunt disguised as a product launch.

The result? Frustrated customers, zero actual cameras in circulation, and a bunch of Instagram stories about being “sold out.” Meanwhile, the cameras that could have been creating genuine buzz and user-generated content are sitting in a warehouse somewhere—or maybe they never existed in meaningful quantities at all.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe thousands of people are happily snapping 1.6-megapixel photos with their Charmeras right now, and I just happened to experience a technical glitch at the worst possible moment. But until I see some eBay listings, user photos, or people actually talking about using these cameras, the whole thing feels like it’s selling the excitement of wanting something more than the satisfaction of actually having it.

Another theory

Popular photography supply website B&H lists the camera as “out of stock”.

It’s interesting how they can list the camera when it’s supposed to be a special item you have to buy from Kodak’s site, but anyway. The main point is the date for the expected availability. Beginning of November 2025. Oh my. How convenient. That’s right before the Christmas shopping season.

I’m guessing Kodak makes this fake hype to get people to want their camera. I’m seeing posts all over online saying, “I want it! I want it!” Then, when Christmas comes, we’ll see the supply come out. Or I hope. As with anything, I wait a couple of months to have it. Especially if they keep the $30 price tag.

(Warning: This is all speculation. I’m airing my frustration.)
