Overture has a great search engine tool that tells you how many searches were done for any word you enter: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
So I put together a list of 151 animals and plunked them into the system.
Quite surprisingly, cow was number one by far!
Here’s the top ten animals searched online:
1,836,673 Cow
876,600 Dog
867,274 Cat
551,964 Horse
264,312 Wolf
239,099 Eagle
235,440 Dragon
231,533 Fox
185,986 Tiger
185,986 Weasel
And the lowest ten animals searched online:
3,109 Cockatoo
3,109 Grasshopper
2,026 Porcupine
1,809 Newt
1,779 Porpoise
1,569 Squid
1,276 Cobra
1,217 Anemone
526 Cicada
27 Condor

what is the timeframe in which these numbers are based on? Was “cow” searched online 1,836,673 times in a week? in a day? in a month? what sites does overture monitor the searches? is it the entire internet? or do they monitor the searches on just the big sites like google and yahoo?
is there a way that i can get overture to tell me the number of times a phrase has been searched on ebay alone?
these numbers are from December 2004. I’m not sure where overture gets their numbers from. They are owned by yahoo though, so i would think that maybe these are yahoo searches, because overture in of itself is not a search engine. It’s just a service to interpret search results. Here: “This provides search results for top web portals such as Yahoo!, AltaVista, AlltheWeb and other sites.”
i don’t know of any tools that tell you how many times a keyword is searched on eBay. If anyone knows of one, please post it here. We would be very glad to hear about it.
Very interesting that Cicada is so far down on the list. Didn’t we just have an invasion of cicadas? I would expect people would be searching like crazy to learn about them. Very curious
i have a slew of animal paintings for sale online at ebay (search for “unmoose”). The auctions have been up for 3.5 days (half way to the one week deadline). So far the elephant painting is running away with the total number of visits. Here’s the totals thus far: 29 elephant 06 camel 10 giraffe 04 lamb 09 lion 18 monkey (blue) 18 monkey (pink) 04 panther 05 raccoon 15 rhino 11 walrus It seems as though the elephant is running away with this thing. 29 hits! Next closest is the blue and pink monkeys with 18 each. The monkey vote could be misleading because there are two monkey paintings available. Some people may be choosing just to look at one of the two paintings. Monkey Pink may be stealing votes just like Ralph Nader stole votes from Al Gore. I am shocked that the raccoon has only 5 hits so far. I thought there would be many more raccoon collectors out there. I also spelled it “racoon” in the auction subject line. Raccoon can be spelled with two or one “c”s officially. I looked it up. The walrus seems to be rather popular as well. He is betting the giraffe by the length of a walrus whisker.
