If in downtown Chicago, please be careful about the metal moose that is on the loose. It was last seen across from the Tribune Tower in Pioneer Court on top of one of the public art podiums.
It’s said to look like bunch of metal car bumpers welded into the shape of a moose! Oh, wait… (what?… oh… ok…) I just heard that it’s a piece of public art. ooooooops.
The artist John Kearney has been plunkin down sculptures for over 40 years. My favorite has to be the gorilla.
Pioneer Court is now becoming quite the platform for public art recently. Cows, chairs, giant french fries, giant onion rings, and even a monster newspaper box.
But I really like how the addition of this moose currently makes a public art trifecta with:
1) Moose
2) Giant onion rings and
3) Monster newspaper box

my what an UNLIKELY MOOSE!
I like how the moose is anatomically correct!!
His many outdoor creations have included: –a chromium plated bull elephant at the Lincoln Park Zoo –two goats at the corner of Clark and Deming Street –a gorilla hanging out for 20 years in front of the Uptown Hull House –an 18-foot tyrannosaurus rex at the Academy of Science –a life-size giraffe at the Museum of Science and Industry –a trio of deer at the Amoco Building terrace –two horses in the 1800 block of Sedgwick –and most recently the Tin Man in Oz Park. His sculptures can also be found at: –Mitchell Museum in Mt. Vernon, IL, the Detroit Children s Museum, –Ulrich Museum of Wichita State University –His “Chromosaurs” (a t-rex and triceratops, and stegosaurus – weighing a total of eight tons) landed at the Dallas Museum of Natural History in 1998. –two bronzes at the Museum of Contemporary Art –two bronzes at the south entrance of the Field Museum. source: http://www.anatomicallycorrect.org/rock.htm Mr. Kearney reminds us, with an ever-dwindling supply of materials, “Over the years, bumpers have gotten sparse, now they re all rubber.” Man, I want to see a gallery of all his stuff!
I really miss the monster newspaper box… and the giant onion rings. I guess the monster ate the giant onion rings, and then he ran away!
How much longer before this moose decides to get up and run away? I’ll miss him too.
i’ll have to check out his sculptures at the detroit children’s museum! i was very impressed with the moose sculpture in chicago.
