*BOOOOM!* Lightning strikes literally right outside my living room window. The edges of my computer monitor change colors. Landline phone is dead.
A couple days later the phone is still dead, so I called AT&T to set up a service call. That same day an AT&T serviceman came to my apartment building and looked at the box in the basement. But he said the problem is in my apartment, and that AT&T charges you a flat fee of $71 the moment they step into your apartment. Say what?! I’ve tried two different phones in two different jacks and none of them work. I’m sorry AT&T, but this is YOUR problem. I’m not shelling out $71 for some service I was considering canceling anyways, cuz I don’t even use my landline.
The serviceman is standing outside with me explaining the $71 fee to me. He wants to come into my place to fix my phone. To which I simply reply, “Cancel my service.” He was honestly shocked. I felt rather bold. “That‚Äôs right, I don‚Äôt want the service anymore, just cancel it.” That‚Äôs the real solution here.
AT&T, you can take your $71 service fees and stick it in your ear! I hope many other people cancel their service after this mass outage in Chicago.

Luckily I’ve never had the need to have a landline in my name, and haven’t lived in a house that had one for at least a year and a half now. The cable and phone companies are two entities that I’ve vowed to never allow to get a foothold in my new apartment. Now if only I could get rid of the utility company.. Also, the link in the “Subscription Center” for Google Reader is b0rked – missing the beginning of the img tag.
Way to go! Now that Aurora has free wireless internet I am ready to dump AT&T too. I pay $100 a month for a phone line and DSL. What a ripoff.
free wireless internet in Aurora? what?
The city of lights is becoming the city of internets.
I haven’t had a landline in ~3 years now. I feel liberated. Remember, AT&T today is really the old SBC, which is the old Ameritech, and before that it was Illinois Bell …. and before that it was … (drum roll) …..AT&T.
Never count Aurora out! We are the first in everything. Now that the entire world has copied our street light idea we bring free wireless wireless internet access to the masses. Sorry Naperville, you are once again one step behind. You’re right Abhay those filthy phone scammers keep changing their name…AT&T goes around screwing people and then changes their name every few years hoping we forget who they really are.
They need to sick Michael Vick out on AT&T.
AT&T knocked out my home phone when they tried to set up my dsl. Now neither are working, and they want ME to contact sales and billing to fix this. No way. BTW, my payments are current.
