Hang up frames on various things in the public, and call it art. A crack on the wall in a train station. A tree trunk in Pioneer Court. All art. Print out captions with title and your name. Post the caption next to the frame.
Leave some frames laying around, encouraging people to put the frame on something they find, making it art.
Thanks to Kathryn Born for writing, “Response to Response” on artslant.com which provided the inspiration for this idea.
“The paperclip slipped onto paper is not art. Hang it on a spot on a white wall in the Whitney, then it’s art. All art needs a frame, no matter how conceptual – it requires a boundary declaring the limits of the artwork. Without a frame, it’s not art.”

I have the feeling that this idea has totally been done already. But hey. It’s fun. So what.
You are right, this idea is not new, but it is worth revisiting and a neat idea all around
I sent you top-secret suggestions! … but you haven’t responded yet. boo to that!
top-secret? You mean over the Im-ah Instant-ah Messenger-ah?
Hello, Earth to Matthew, Paul Schmidt and I came up with this idea in high school at Chicago Christian High School in 1992. It was 16 years ago. During Fine Arts week, the school hung all sorts of different artwork on the hallway walls of the school. Just about all the pieces were place in white over-mats. I cut out my own white over-mat and framed some sort metal plate on the wall. It wasn’t a light switch. It was a metal place with two red lights. I also printed out a title card, however I don’t recall the title I came up with. I took a photo of it. Some day I will have to look for it in my archives. I recall the installation remained throughout Fine Arts week. It’s cool to make art like that before you even know of the concept of installation art. yea.
17 years, not 16.
Thankfully we had a high school art teacher that appreciated concept. Can you imagine if she chastised us for putting frames on light switches? and said, “that’s not art!”
I have a really gaudy and ornate gold frame around an Etch-a-Sketch hanging in the basement playroom. And I think I may frame my braided belt, too.
I’m glad you are framing your braided belt instead of wearing it. That braided belt should be memoralized as a relic of times past.
Heh. They took it a step further. http://didisworld.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/improv-anywhere-new-york-subway-art-gallery/
