body mass index is whack

The %%bodymass_full.jpg]body mass index is messed up. I’m 5’11” 180 pounds, putting me right on the border of being overweight with an index of 25. I know that I’m totally not overweight. Maybe it’s all the brains in my head tipping the scale. 😉 Check out your %%bodymass_full.jpg]body mass index.

mine is 21.8. matt, i think yours is high because you work out and have more muscle, which is heavier than fat. i don’t think the BMI takes this into consideration.

It stats on the chart that BMI sometimes overestimates body fat in people who are muscular and underestimates body fat in people who have lost muscle mass [like the eldery”>. BMI is a great tool for most of the people in this country who are overweight slobs. If you are muscular, you know it, if you’re fat, you probably don’t. Americans are F-A-T and are in total denial about it. BMI could very well be waking up the people who need to be awoken. When I was 180 [and it wasn’t muscle kids”> and I checked my BMI, I was shocked. Now I’m down to just below 160 on my way to my ideal weight which is the healthy BMI range. My doctor is happier too.

People like yourself who are in shape don’t need a BMI. You KNOW you’re healthy. The BMI is supposed to catapult fat people into action.

“Many web sites, books, and articles that publish BMI charts tend to simplify the message”….I think this blog is guilty 😉

I still think its the responsibility of those who are offering the BMI chart calculator to the public to be as accurate as possible. they are offering a service and its not supposed to be used as a shock tool. It not hard to add a few questions to the assessment to make it more accurate, such as the waist /hip ratio, general exercise q (how regularly, none / Once a week/2-3 times/more than 3). Although majority of your country is over weight / unhealthy, there is still a lot of people esp kids who have insecurities and eating disorders too.
