The day I helped a baby bird learn how to fly

Check out the visitor we had on our porch windowsill.

Baby bird sitting on window sill

A baby bird!

It was still drizzling outside, and I thought Amazon delivered a package, so I checked the front porch. Lo and behold outside on one of our windowsills was a little baby bird! The momma bird was sitting next to the baby bird, but as soon as I entered the porch, the momma bird flew away onto the driveway.

The momma bird watched intently as I approached the baby bird. I tried to scare the bird away, but it wasn’t going anywhere. They came from the bird nest from our neighbor’s house. I think what happened was that this was the baby bird’s first ever flight. It went from the nest across the driveway, and landed onto our window sill.

I went to get my camera to take photos. The momma bird was still on the driveway trying to convince the baby bird to fly down. But the baby bird just sat. Perhaps its wings were too wet from all the rain. I snapped the photos, and the baby bird didn’t flinch.

We left it alone for a couple hours. Then I came back to see if it was still there. It was! Again, the momma bird was on our stoop trying to get the baby to fly down. This time, I walked across our front porch to the window, and YELLED REALLY LOUD and jumped… twice. That did it. The baby bird flew away immediately.

At first it shot up into the air, and then started to dip down a bit, but then it corrected its path and swooped up into a tree out of view.

I helped that baby bird learn how to fly.
