Walmart turns Jeff Koons’ $14,500 art into a $10 party decoration

I discovered something peculiar in the Art Institute’s Modern Wing shop. Nestled between $3.95 magnets and $12.95 calendars, perched on elegant pedestals, sat something extraordinary – miniature versions of Jeff Koons’ famous balloon animal sculptures.

A museum-style label beside them read:

JEFF KOONS
BALLOON MONKEY (ORANGE)
Porcelain
Limited edition of 999

Three different gleaming versions were on display: Balloon Swan (Magenta), Balloon Rabbit (Violet), and Balloon Monkey (Orange) – all miniature versions of Koons’ monumental sculptures. An official seal from Bernardaud certified their authenticity. And then, in discrete text: “$11,500.00, ineligible for discount.”

$11,500. In a museum gift shop. I had to read it twice.

The “ineligible for discount” line brought the price to reality. Yes, someone might actually buy one of these—and they might try to use their 10% member discount.

These authorized editions aren’t unique to Chicago – galleries and museums worldwide sell these Koons miniatures for around $14,500. They’re prestigious, limited, certified pieces of art. Or at least they were. Because now, in 2025, you can get them at Walmart for $10.

And if even $10 feels steep for your philosophical journey into existence, there’s always the plush version for $3.

The irony here? Koons made his name by elevating everyday objects into high art. Now Walmart has turned his high art back into everyday objects.

On Walmart’s shelves, there’s no mention of Jeff Koons, no hint of artistic legacy. Makes you wonder what Jeff Koons thinks about Walmart selling balloon dog replicas for $10 each.

The contrast between high art and mass retail becomes almost comedic when you look at how each seller describes essentially the same object:

The product is listed on Walmart’s website (feel free to skip over this gray box)

Balloon Dog (Blue) is the quintessential example of the Celebration cycle. Conceived between 1994 and 1996, this important group of works represents a series of special events (birthdays, weddings, holidays…), which the artist isolates from their normal context and expands in order to create contemporary archetypes.

The original sculpture Balloon Dog which measures more than 3 meters high represents a balloon, twisted in the shape of a dog, which has been greatly enlarged, cast in stainless steel, mirror-polished, and then painted with transparent color. The inflatable balloon evokes childhood memories, toys, and children’s joyful games; the artist takes an object that represents the fleeting pleasures of life and renders it permanent. Along with the innocence and simplicity of childhood, Koon’s work conveys a deeper symbolic meaning, as Koons explains: “It’s a very optimistic piece; it’s like a balloon that a clown would twist for you at a birthday party. But at the same time, it’s a Trojan horse. These pieces have an interior life. The exterior is totally reflective. It constantly reminds viewers of their existence, of your existence, it’s all about you. When you leave the room, it’s gone. When you move, the abstraction takes place; nothing happens without you; it needs you.”

For nearly 160 years, Bernardaud has worked with the most skilled artisans at their workshop in Limoges and has created new technologies to achieve the porcelain art pieces made in collaboration with Jeff Koons. No detail was compromised in rendering the dog in porcelain. Bernardaud was challenged with the reflective surface, finessing the glaze techniques and refining the surface to create as smooth a surface as possible made for a porcelain finish.

  2. Fingerprints can be removed from the surface with water and a soft cotton cloth. Do not use any detergent
  3. Display or store Balloon Dog (Blue) out of direct sunlight
  4. Bernardaud or your retailer will not be responsible for any damage or mishandling of Balloon Dog (Blue) after it has been sold

The way the Walmart website describes the artwork on their site is an interesting contrast to how the art manufacturer Bernardaud describes it. I like to imagine what if the Bernardaud description was posted on the Walmart product. Specifically, Koon’s quote. What would consumers think about it?

And what if Bernardaud used Walmart’s description for the art?

Imagine this Walmart listing:

Valentine’s Day Pink Balloon Dog Décor, $10

It’s a Trojan horse. While seemingly just a playful pup wearing a matching tutu and jeweled collar, this piece has an interior life. The exterior is totally reflective, constantly reminding viewers of their existence. When you leave the room, it’s gone. When you move, the abstraction takes place; nothing happens without you; it needs you.

Perfect for any room or office!

Great to display on an entry table, end table, mantel, or coffee table (out of direct sunlight to preserve the metaphysical relationship between viewer and object)

WARNING: This object represents the fleeting pleasures of life rendered permanent. Your existence may be questioned during installation.

And conversely, imagine Bernardaud’s $42,000 listing:

Balloon Dog (Blue) Limited Edition Luxury Decor

  • Playful pup perfect for any luxury penthouse or hedge fund office
  • Makes a great conversation starter at your next board meeting
  • Add to your art collection for a fun pop of cultural capital
  • Available in multiple colors (each sold separately, collecting them all strongly encouraged)
  • Ships from vendor (white gloves and existential crisis included)
  • Great gift for the billionaire who has everything!

Measures: 18.8″L x 6.2″W x 15.75″T (sized perfectly for your marble mantlepiece)

Perhaps Walmart has done something remarkable here, even if by accident. Where Bernardaud sells a portal to understanding the human condition for $42,000, Walmart has democratized that same existential journey. Now for $10, anyone can own an object that questions their existence, reflects their presence, and serves as their own personal Trojan horse of meaning. The same shiny surface that makes us ponder life’s deepest questions… now available with a tutu, and eligible for free shipping with orders over $35.
