In an effort to use my notepad more often, instead of my phone. I am attaching my phone to my notepad using rubber bands.

Trying my new notepad + iPhone combination. The iPhone provides a solid surface to write on. But the edges of the paper are a bit challenging to write on, because the edges of the paper overhang the phone. I have the much smaller iPhone SE 2020. This might work better with today’s larger iPhones.

Bonus: I can attach a pencil to the notepad!

The bulk of the iPhone inside my notepad might make this not work. Plus, the rubber bands are likely to slip off as I take it in and out of my pocket.
The long-term goal is to buy another iPhone case and hot-glue it to the cardboard, so I don’t need to use the rubber bands.
I will make sure to cut a hole in the cardboard for the camera. This is actually a bonus feature of the iPhone SE 2020. That iPhone has only a tiny hole for the camera. Unlike today’s iPhones, which have a gigantic lens setup. I just need to make one small hole in the cardboard instead of the giant gaping hole needed for today’s iPhone camera lenses.

While my notebook isn’t attached to my phone I do have one. Work made it impossible to print from home, so I just started writing everything down on paper. I just can’t give it up! I still write notes in a notebook at work and at home
That’s cool that you continue to write your notes down. For me, I have to force myself to use pcneil and paper. So many of my notes are typed on a computer now.
I have multiple things going which qualify as notepads. But I am soon to exhaust some and have been mulling over what to get. Field Notes are a bit small but some of what I might do. Thoughts?
I’ve been pondering going with a larger notepad, too. For over 20 years, I’ve used the exact same size notepad, 3-1/2″ × 6″. I had to look up the size of Field Notes. They use 3-1/2″ × 5-1/2″. So mine is just half an inch longer. I started using that size, because there were some cheap notepads in Walgreens I bought back in 2004. I liked the size, so I kept making my own.
Lately, I’ve been wondering if 3-1/2″ × 6″ is too small and constricting my thoughts. As I like to say about online composition boxes like Twitter, “tiny boxes yield tiny thoughts.” I’m guessing that also applies to the size of paper in the physical world.
Right now, I don’t have any clear thoughts on what size of larger notepads to use. Just last night I started to use a 5-1/2 × 8-1/2 notepad. Part of me wants to go really big, like a 9×12. Just to see what happens.
I’ve even considered hot-gluing my phone to the 9×12 to see if I carry that 9×12 notebook with me everywhere.
I do know one thing, I much prefer notebooks that lay flat. The Field Notes appear thin enough that you can make them lie flat. But when you go thicker, like those hardcover notebooks, they seem like they might be hard to write in. They certainly look nice. And if the niceness of how they look makes someone use it, that’s cool…. actually, maybe I should try a hardcover. Sometimes I find the Double-O Wiring binding gets in the way of my hand.
