Why do cashiers hand you the paper bills first and then try to precariously hand you the change on top of that? It makes no sense, because the coins end up sliding all over the place.
PLEASE ALL CASHIERS OF THE WORLD, follow this sequence:
1) Hand your customer the coins FIRST
2) THEN hand over the paper bills
Thank you.

YAY, MATT! I am totally for your method. When I worked at Burger King (yay, pre-college jobs), I always gave my customers the coins first. And whatever happened to the practice of putting your receipt in the bag? I liked that. Now almost all cashiers hand you your receipt along with your change — so you have an extra item to stow away before you leave them. Grrr.
It makes more sense to hand the change first since you are counting up to the dollar first … “.85 … .95 … One dollar and 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20” I was also going to make mention of the receipt. I don’t like my receipt in with my bills. I like the receipt in the bag. Having been in retail, however, I do remember the transition from putting the receipt in the bag to putting the receipt in the customer’s hand … at the request of the customer. Somewhere along the line customers were asking for the receipt. If I remember correctly, it had to do with theft. If someone stole your bag, they had your receipt … and back in the old days, credit card receipts had an imprint of your credit card and your signature. These days stores are not supposed to print your entire account number on the receipt … check next time … the numbers up to the last three should be “X”ed out. If they aren’t and if you care enough, tell the store management. I do believe it is required now to X out the account numbers. Customers who want their receipt in the bag unite!!
when i was a soda jerk, i always put the change in the customer’s hand first. It not only was easier for the customer, but it was easier for me. I don’t understand why cashiers constantly put the bills in people’s hands first. I’d say it happens 90% of the time to me. Don’t they understand that putting the bill in people’s hands first will cause the change slide around awkwardly? Human hands can hold change better than a dollar bill can hold change. Outside of operating the cash register, there’s not much invovled with being a cashier. Cashiers need to think about what their doing and wise up.
