After reading “Why Climb a Tree?,” I’m on a quest to find a tree to climb.
A year ago I was walking around my neighborhood trying to find a tree to climb. I didn’t find any climbable trees in my area. Isn’t that strange?
At Illinois Wesleyan University there is a tree behind the art building that was perfect to climb. Its branches provided the perfect place to sit. I need a tree like this.
Just out of curiousity, does anyone have a tree they like to climb? (now or a tree from your past)

I asked this question on facebook and got a dozen SUPER answers! Angie O. Yes – it was more of a shrub and I had no business trying to climb it. This was as a kid, at my grandparents’ house. Hilesh P. oh hell yes! i would scope out trees to make sure they were climbable. i would go up in big trees with friends and we would have lovely conversations. Tom S. I had a favorite tree to climb when I was a kid. I fought with my parents for years to let me build a treehouse, but the tree really didn’t have substantial enough branches. So I built a fort on the ground instead, but even after it was built, I still climbed the tree Beth G. dude…ask the weather dept. but i heard 80 degrees this wknd. lol Noel M. yes! every tree that was climbable in a 2 block area in my old neighborhood as a kid. that’s what trees were for! my fave was a mulberry tree accessible from the alley behind an apartment building. Jamie M. There was a great old oak tree that was in a big old vacant lot near my street. We build a tree house in it. Unfortunately, it was overrun by by the high school kids that went up there to smoke and drink. Eliana B. Do you? Henry D. Gram D’s backyard at the city house…that was the perfect climbing tree! Christine H. There were a few trees across the street that I wanted to climb. My mom wouldn’t let me because they were on the church lot and she didn’t think it was respectful or something. The neighborhood went bad and we moved. The trees have been taken down 🙁 Sure wish I had climbed those trees. Mark R. I was a huge tree-climber as a kid. One of my faves was in our front yard. THe lowest branch was just high enough where you had to jump up to reach it, and then pull yourself up and swing your leg over. I liked challenges though. and would use a rope to climb the tree if necesssary. Winona P. Adam does – I like to stay on terra firma. Cat M. YESSSS! Tree climbing rocks! I was not good at it when I was lil though. Oooh there were some good ones in Champaign in the park near my apartment. But Chicago cops in Grant park apparently don’t agree? teehee
@Angie: a shrub! Whoa. You could stand on top of it! @Hilesh: oooo. conversing a tree. I don’t think I’ve ever done that. @Tom: A tree house… a ground house! … Read More @Beth: Does the weather department have some good climbalble tree suggestions? @Noel: Every tree in a two block radius! Wow. I think most peeps single out a fav tree and use that. But why not use all the trees in the area!? @Jamie: Whoa. So you built a tree house, and then some pirate t-eenagers came and took it over? @Eliana: Yes, I do… i’ll get to mine in a second. @Henry: Indeed that tree in Grandma’s backyard was sweet for climbing. I remember my mom forbidding us to climb it for fear of us breaking a bone. But we would still climb it. @Christine: Oh interesting. I never thought about how climbing a tree would be disrepectful for the tree. Or maybe for the neighborhood. I always thought it was rather nice when someone was up in a tree. I can’t believe they took those trees down! Especially climbable trees! @Mark: Using a rope to climb the tree! Whoa. I NEVER thought of that. I’m gonna have to carry a rope with me to my park. I like the idea of using a rope. It makes me feel like an expert. @Winona: If you like terra firma, do you go on boats? @Cat: haha! I wasn’t good at climbing trees when I was lil either. In fact, I could never do the monkey bars. I’d love for a Chicago cop to yell at me to get out of a tree. Ha! It’ll be a nice change of pace for getting yelled at for taking photos.
I really wish I had a favorite climbing tree now. I’m on the hunt.
Oh, i’m still accepting comments from people about a tree you like to climb. Thanks.
I had one in my front yard where my family lived from when I was in kindergarten through 9th grade – my friend across the street and I designated different branches as rooms and the whole tree was a house.
