chocolate vs. vanilla

A recent email I sent to the “vanilla queen” at vanilla.com

What, is there some sort of vanilla brigade out there wanting to fully eliminate any traces of chocolate dominance from the planet? Face it you vanilla villians, Chocolate has you flat out beat in edible products. Yeah, you may have your stronghold on other frilly products such as air fresheners and candles. And you may have had Vanilla Ice as a spokesperson. But chocolate has you beat hands down in food-like products. Note how i sad “food-like”, because is a chocolate bar really “food”? No it is not, it is pure heaven. Yes that’s right, the gates of heaven are made of pure milk chocolate.

Most chocolate recipes actually benefit from a bit of vanilla. There are times when I prefer vanilla over chocolate, but mainly only in ice cream. When it comes to cooking or bakin, however, I would be hard pressed to choose one over the other.

The very best chocolate bars taste the way it does because of vanilla. Without vanilla, chocolate would just taste like dirt.

I don’t know why we have to pit to glorious flavors against each other like this. Chocolate isn’t the opposite of vanilla any more than cinnamon or almonds are. Often chocolate does contain some vanilla but it’s not the dominant flavor and it wouldn’t take “like dirt” without it. They are both fantastic flavors and we should be glad to have them instead of trying to figure out which one “beats” the other. Aren’t there enough pointless rivalries in the world? Now excuse me while I go evangelize the ways of Pepsi to all those poor coke drinkers.
