“Ganska cool” means “pretty cool” in Swedish

Recently I learned that “ganska cool” in Swedish means “pretty cool.”

Yeah, I read that as “gangsta” at first.

The word “ganska” is surprisingly versatile in Swedish. According to the Cambridge Swedish-English dictionary, it can mean rather, quite, downright, enough, fairly, or pretty. It’s one of those useful modifier words that adds just the right amount of emphasis without going overboard.

Speaking of “ganska cool,” it’s also the title of a track by the band Cheap Cuts (I blogged about them recently). The song sounds a bit like a Fatboy Slim track. You can find it on Spotify, or check out their live acoustic version performed on a dock for a more intimate take.

Now we just need a version with the Swedish Chef singing “Ganska Cool.”

There’s something charming about how languages can surprise us with familiar-sounding combinations that mean something completely different. “Ganska cool” perfectly embodies that Swedish approach to understated appreciation—not overly enthusiastic, just… pretty cool.

Check out the music I’m discovering. Every year, I make a playlist with songs I’ve found. It’s like a mixtape for every year since 2009.
