If Chicago gets the 2016 Olympics, it would be very interesting to see the olympics in another city first. That way you know what to expect when the games come to Chicago. Plus then we could meet that weird block-shaped person in their logo. What is that!? And why is it that their official logo? “Hello! I’m rock man!” As it slowly moves along crushing everything in its giant rock body path.
Let’s go to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics!

Hi, I saw this blog and thought this link might be helpful in explaining why Canada chose this image as their official logo.
Oops! This is the link http://www.pinnaclefarms.ca/ORIANAsite/AboutNameandLogo/InuksukNew.html
Wow. Thank you so much Sue! So it is a person made of stones! Wow! hahaha. You just totally transformed the meaning of that logo for me. I was thinking that it was just another one of those weird olympic logos that have a vague human form using blobby shapes. But this is actually something related to the culture of Canada. Here’s some highlights of the text from that link you provided: Inuksuks (the actual plural is inuksuit) are stone figures created by the first inhabitants of the Canadian north, the Inuit.
and some more text: Not only has Nunavut made Inuit culture, concerns, and aspirations more visible, it has brought much more attention to the inuksuk, as you can see from the Nunavut flag. Popular appeal combined with official recognition has expanded the inuksuk’s realm from the cold Canadian north to the warmth of Canadian hearts and hearths everywhere.
I love Vancouver! I feel in love with the Inuit so much that I almost got an Inuit Eagle tattoo!
Actually, if Vancouver is the site of the 2010 Olympics, it pretty much kills any chance Chicago or LA has for the 2016 olympics. IOC doesn’t like to see too many Olympics on one continent in so many years.
k, see you there.
I think the logo is fun. When I first saw the logo, it reminded me when we stacked those rocks by the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The cool thing about that logo is that schoolkids in Vancouver can easily make their own version of the Vancouver Olympic logo with a pair of scissors and construction paper. Some people may interpret that comment as a negative critique on the logo in that it’s childish and elementary. Well, yes, it’s child-like and elementary, but I think that’s the beauty of the logo. And what’s wrong with having schoolchildren interpret the logo? That’s great fun. I can also see some fun Flash animation based on the Vancouver Rock Man Olympic logo.
I happened to be in Vancouver this past weekend. A big, crowded (and very interesting) city with a pretty bad traffic problem (wonder how they’ll deal w/ 2010) … from what people tell me, there’s some anti-Olympic sentiment going on. I could see how a major event like the Olympics can really inundate a city on lots of levels.
how can a WINTER olympics be an indicator of a SUMMER olympics… unless you mean how the city is going to handle the olympics. Like Becky said, Chicago has a MASSIVE traffic problem not to mention Public Transportation underfunding.
