the measuring tape

8:30pm

Riding on a somewhat empty redline train northbound. Pull up to Montrose stop, people get off. A woman sitting next to me gasps, “He forgot his tape, his tape.” and points to a seat where a construction worker was just sitting, but his measuring tape was still on the seat.

She jumps up, grabs the tape and bolts out of the closing doors to flag down the man.

In all of the five seconds that this happened, I should have gotten up and held the doors open for the kind lady. But it all happened so fast, and I didn’t think his tape was all that important, I would have left it on the seat. But I’m impressed by how quickly the lady decided to return the measuring tape to this man.

I only wish I was half as fast in reacting to holding the doors open for her. Now she has to sit and wait for the next train to come tonight.

Maybe the measuring tape is a metaphor for the amounts of something.
