OS X have a ba-jillion font locations, and you end up with this super duper long font list menu. Here’s how to make the font list smaller. Read more.
Managing fonts in OS X
Happening right now on Spudart: Press a leaf in an envelope with the date and story written on it until 2026-10-31

(this is done on OS 10.3.2 and Suitcase 11. Suitcase is not essential here, and I think a lower operating system should be similiar as well) What you need to do: 1) Open Suitcase. Select: Tools > Manage System Fonts… Make sure that you are not managing any of your system fonts. 2) Remove all fonts from: Hard Drive/Users/your_user_name/Library/Fonts 3) Remove all fonts from: Hard Drive/Library/Fonts 4) Remove all fonts from: Network/Library/Fonts 5) Remove unwanted fonts from: Hard Drive/System/Library/Fonts But! Make sure you keep the following (essential for OS X to work): * Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont * AppleGothic.dfont * AquaKanaBold.otf * AquaKanaRegular.otf * Keyboard.dfont * LastResort.dfont * LucidaGrande.dfont * Hei.dfont In order to make changes to this folder, the permissions need to be changed, here’s how: 1. Select the Fonts folder within at: Hard Drive/System/Library/Fonts. 2. Press Command-I. 3. Open the Ownership & Permissions tabs 4. Click on the lock icon. 5. In the dialog box, enter your administrator password. 6. Change the owner in the pop-up from System to your login name 7. Delete the unwanted fonts. 6) Remove unwanted fonts from: Hard Drive/System Folder/Fonts But! Make sure you keep the following (they are essential to the system): * Charcoal * Chicago * Geneva * Monaco * New York I’ve also kept the following in there (standard, but not essential stuff for websites-n-things): * Adobe Sans MM * Adobe Serif MM * Arial * Arial Black * Comic Sans MS * Trebuchet MS * Verdana * Webdings * Wingdings * Zapf Chancery Apple recommends that you replace the following fonts with postscript versions * Courier * Helvetica * Times (good luck finding a postscript verison of this) * Symbol (couldn’t find a postscript version of this one either) * Zapf Dingbats 7) Remove fonts from: Hard Drive/Library/Application Support Adobe is a bugger here. Get rid of everything except: * Reqrd * AdobeFnt05.lst Sources: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040123134139224&query=system+fonts http://www.wesleyan.edu/its/media/fonts_osx.htm
Here’s the word from Adobe. http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2f2e2.htm I like how they are still trying to promote ATM Deluxe for classic users.
hmm. i know that at my company, this is an issue.
If you are running Adobe Acrobat or ATM Deluxe, you must have the following fonts in your OS 9 system folder: * Adobe Sans MM * Adobe Serif MM * AdobeSanMM * AdobeSerMM I’ve found it needs both the short name and the long name, otherwise, i get an annoying message on the startup of classic: “The substition fonts necessary for Acrobat or ATM Deluxe are missing. Please re-install either software package.”
Adobe Serif MM Adobe sans MM
did i spell that wrong?
he’s probably just emphasizing your point… ?
Thanks in advance to the kind soul that can assist me with a re-occuring problem I hav with OS X. I continually receive the message, “THE FONTS “ADOBE SERIF MM AND ADOBE SANS MM MUST BE INSTALLED. PLEASE INSTALL BOTH FONTS BEFORE CONTINUING. ACROBAT READER WILL NOW QUIT. Please confirm the steps I need to rectify this problem……….yes, I may seem a bit illiterate when it comes to operating a MAC, but I am still learning the ins and outs. Kind Regards……Spike.
