3 steps to better email etiquette

I love getting emails from people. It’s so nice. There’s just a couple things that would make it even more pleasant…

1) use http:// in links

When emailing a link to someone, please PLEASE PLEASE include the “http://” in the url.

GOOD:

https://www.spudart.org

BAD:

www.spudart.org

Email programs will make the text into a link if you include the http://. But if it’s not there, the text will remain normal and unclickable. It’s just a common courtesy in this land of the information superhighway.

2) One space after a period, not two

Please do NOT put two spaces after a period. Two spaces were included when we were using typewriters. Computers now have automatic spacing and kerning where we don’t need two spaces anymore. If you continue to use two spaces after a period, it will make you look like a COMPLETE DUFUS.

3) Include a subject

Yeah, it’s faster to zing off an email with no subject, but having a subject in there gives quicker reference down the road when trying to find a particular email.

Another great etiquette list! Regarding the subject line, you know that I try to fool company email senors by using off-subjects, but you wouldn’t get my emails otherwise. Any tips on how to put the real subject in the subject header while still allowing it to get through?

Disagree on #2. Although that be the reason for the origins of the two spaces convention, it provides increased legitibility, especially when abbreviations are involved and ambiguity can arise. Like this: “Unless you are leaving at 9 a.m. Tom will be leaving at 10.”

Actually I was taught to use only one space after a period in typing. The teacher made a point of noting that one typewriters you use two spaces and on computers you use one. It is recognized as the standard.

Of course none of that means diddly when I post comments with typos :^/

I didn’t know that was the origin of the 2 spaces. I can never make up my mind if I want to do 1 space or 2 so I try to switch off. Monday, Wednesday and Friday = 2 spaces, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday = 1 space. On Sunday I do 3 just to appease anyone else out there who I’m forgetting.
